I don't know if I want to mess with one of these or not but I am really tempted.

Are they decent cameras and which one do you think is better?

Hi Ron I picked up a Zorki 4k a couple of weeks back and I am very impressed with it. It's very similar to Zenits (from the same factory) easy to service and very solid just waiting to put a film through it- from what I hear the Kiev is good but more complex and the shutter is a bit of a weak point because of that. try to get a Jupiter 8 lens if possible its reckoned to be the best all rounder for either of the bodies. Good luck Very Happy if you try one

I have the Kiev 4 (with meter) and am thinking of selling it. The one thing
to consider is the Zorki, FEDs, use the LTM lenses which are plentiful on
the bay compared to the Contax mount for the Kiev.

The Kiev, due to wider mirror separation of the RF is held to be more accurate. Whether that is true or not, dunno.

If you need just the 4 Jupiters (12,8,9,11) then there is more contax/kiev versions and they are about 25% cheaper.

Of course there is much more LTM lens manufacturers and types. I have used Kiev but thought about getting a Zorki for this reasons. Buy both!

Thanks for the information. No matter what a person thinks of their always seems to be someone here that knows about it.

If you want to go back to 1930s-style photography, the Kiev (=Zeiss Contax made in the Ukraine) is the one to choose. I had one a few years ago and sold it, and then got another one last year. No problems with either. I also had a Zorki 4, until the shutter died. That wasn't nearly as satisfying to use and didn't feel anything like as well made.

Kiev fitting USSR lenses sell for less than the Leica thread ones for the Zorki, so I guess that makes the Kiev winner on value-for-money as well.

As with all Russian cameras, pay as little as possible, enjoy them while they last (which could be a long time!) but don't be upset if they break down.

Thanks for the information Stephen.

I know nothing about these cameras.

I'm going to check again, but the last time I looked for Contax mount
lenses for my Kiev, they were not nearly as plentiful as the Russian
LTM ones. This is ebay.us, not ebay.eu, which is probably a big difference
in availability.

I bought the Kiev 4 after seeing Orio's shots with his. My mistake was...
I'm not Orio. Laughing

ebay.com - most are in Russia or Ukraine, don't know if they for some reason aren't visible to you?

Oh no, there are several Ukranian and Russian vendors that I see on the
US site. Shipping runs $25-$42, which bites. The LTM lenses are more
readily available (when I was looking) from US vendors than the Contax
mount. It just seems there was more selection of LTM lenses than Contax
back then, from both foreign and domestic sellers.

It is only $15-20 to here but then, again - we're right across the border. Smile Mad Shocked Confused

For accurate focus the FED2 is tough to beat with its wide base. LTM too.
