Volna-9 Questions

I recently purchased a Volna-9. It seems to have a lot of play on the inner tube. It seems loose and moves back and forth tilting the aperture ring when extended. (See picture below) Is this normal? Also, when I push down on the aperture ring it seems to have a spring action. It turns freely. Is this supposed to lock somehow, or is it designed to always turn freely? Thanks in advance for any information you might have.

Try pushing down the aperture ring, rotating it to some desired aperture, f/8 for example, and releasing it. You should feel it click into place. The ring can now be rotated between the preset value, f/8 in this example, and wide open. So you have the functionality of a double ring preset lens with only one ring. Other FSU lenses behave similarly - e.g., Jupiter 37A, Jupiter 11A, Industar 61 L/Z.

Thank you John for answering that question. I suspected that is how the aperture ring might work, however my Volna-9 must be really old and worn out because try as I might it doesn't click. The filter ring is dented too. (The Ebay seller carefully hid this in his photos of the lens.)

Yes, pushing down on the aperture ring is intended to allow you to limit the aperture range so that you can toggle between wide open and shooting aperture (at the other end of the ring's travel) without looking at the settings. I personally find it a bit unwieldy; perhaps mine is slightly broken but I'm having trouble getting it to click in place at the desired aperture setting.

With the aperture setting in place I don't notice any play on the inner tube.

Seems to be a tricky lens to buy in good condition. I searched for a good one at a decent price for ages, but in the end I decided to get a bargain-priced copy with fungus and clean it up myself. At least then I knew the seller was being honest about the fungus… =)

(Of course, the seller first didn't ship it for three weeks and when I finally raised a PayPal issue, he claimed that the original shipment had been lost and he's generously sending me another lens instead. It came as no surprise when the lens arrived that it had been mailed after the PayPal dispute and the lens was identical to the original pictures, fungus and serial number included. I would like to have his 3D xerox machine.)

These sellers know all the tricks, don't they? Thank you for sharing your interesting experience!
