Does anyone have anything to say about Astronar lenses?
The one I'm looking at and considering appears physically mint, with no outer wear and pristine glass. It's a T-mount with an M42 mount attached.
Solid metal barrels & housing. It's a zoom lens.
I can't seem to find anything significant about this brand, and would
welcome any information from the highly knowledgeable people here.
What, if anything, can you tell me about Astronar lenses?
I expect it's one of those names that was applied to lenses by a prominent
Japanese maker, like so many others, but my search for information has
come up rather blank.
Thanks in advance for any information. _________________ Craig

Astranar was a US importers trademark I believe.
This was, as you surmise, applied to a wide range of lenses, and over a long period of time. I have a huge old Piesker-Berlin 400mm bearing that name, and it must date to the late 1950's. But most of that stuff was certainly Japanese, and from many makers, over four decades.
There were plenty of T-mount preset zoom lenses made in the 1960's, I can only guess at a few makers - I can positively identify many Sun and Tamron products for instance. I suggest you post the specs and pictures and we can give it a shot. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

I think I'd rather not post full specs, until the sale is complete,
just in case others are attempting to outbid me.
It appears to be a solidly-made lens, and as I said, it's solid metal
and glass.
It's attractive to me because it's a 60-some-mm to 200-some-mm
focal length, and it appears to be in pristine condition.
I simply cannot find any reference to Astronar lenses, for quality
or otherwise, which is why I asked about it in the first place. _________________ Craig

I just saw one labelled "Astronar" vs "Astranar"
That one is actually a Tamron 910P, a historic lens, probably the first "consumer"-grade zoom lens marketed.

These are fairly common (I have one), though I've never seen the "Astronar" name before.
As to performance - not bad !
