Need some PS to remove nasty gray, not bad at all from an 500mm (handheld) lens.

Yes its ok for handheld you can get some good results with the lens but focusing can be tricky, as for the' nasty gray' Attila do you mean the bird or the sky? Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

It doesn't look sharp to me.
Try not to strip the EXIF, I wanted to see the shutter speed.

Focus in #1 appears to be slightly past the bird, as the wave beyond
seems sharper to me.
Focus in #2 seems generally soft to me. Nothing else in the shot for reference.
Perhaps this is a limitation of the lens or lens type - ?

Limitation of the lens I think for focus- mirrors can be very hard to get absolutely spot on, so they tend to use depth of field in the design to cover this a little. Also this lens is mounted on the smallest of my m42 extension tubes to clear the flash mounting on the camera, the lens can focus beyond infinity to compensate for this. This feature is also part of the design to allow, I believe, for movement in the mirrors due to temperature change. As for the exif it was fs viewer that stripped it as part of the raw conversion process, the iso was 400 aperture fixed at f8 and the speed was 1/1500, shot taken in av mode.
