I am talking about the macro takumar F4/50mm with the 2 aperture rings on the front of the lens, which is the one that sets the aperture you want and the other that you can open it up fully to see what you are photographing?Am I on the right track or missed the use of these 2 aperture rings?
For arguments sake the 1st ring closet to the camera can be number 1.
Your help much appreciated.

You have it precisely right.

Set your taking aperture with the one ring, which sets a "stop".

Then you can flip the other ring - which actually opens and closes the aperture, and ideally should move very easily - open to focus and closed just before taking your shot.

Thank you
The 1st ring is the stiffer of the 2 and with the more pronounced clicks,The end one is certainly more easier to move....the only thing I forgot to do was move it back when shooting Embarassed
I am excited I actually was on the right track as I could not find a thing in Google and my books seemed to have missed that feature of a lens Rolling Eyes

Do you know what the coloured dots are for?... Perhaps DOF?

Those dots would certainly correspond with the loss of light you would get using a teleconverter. I don't know if that is why they are there, but with a 2x teleconverter when the lens was set on f4 with the white dot, the 2x dot would show you what the effective aperture is.

I've not seen this before.

My first thought was that, as it's a macro lens that can go to 1:1, it was something to do with effective apertures at big extensions.

Maybe it came with dedicated tubes or bellows that were marked for the specified magnifications to correspond with these dots.

It ought to be an outstanding lens if it intended for extreme macro work.

I am convinced that Alex is right. I have a 50mm Minolta macro Rokkor with a scale on the barrel for the magnification and an indication on the focusing ring with the corresponding decreasing of the indicated aperture setting in stops. For your Takumar the factor is the needed extension of the shuttertime with unchanged aperture setting. So focused till 1: 2 you have to set the exposure x2, with extra ring to 1:1 set the exposure x4. Factors you don't have to calculate with, when you are measuring light through the lens ofcourse. But they are important when measuring with a handheld meter of calculating the settings for use of a flashlight.

Thanks for the insight.I have about 10 shots left before I get the first film developed....annoying part is there is always a hint of wind when shooting.I have tried some ambitious shots such as a caterpillar hanging from a thread off a tree...I don't hold out much hope as it was spinning at the time Sad
