Hi, I'm looking for a precious advice from you!
Here is my question:
-I'm looking for a medium tele for my g1 (from 80 to 120 mm = from 40 to 60 mm in FF)
-I'd like to play with selective DOF and with an attractive bokeh (the lens is intended chiefly, but non exclusively, for portrait work)
-It would be great if it comes with a Nikon, or Pentax, or Contax-Yashica, or M 42x1, or Leica R, or Contarex or Olympus OM (because I'd like to play with this )
-It would be great if it wasn't too bulky
-Last but not least: it would be great if you could help me with two different answers: one given regardless the price, and one considering it!
So, please give your best advice to a young girl looking for an helping hand!
Thanks
Linda

You can use many M42 lenses - Takumars 50/1.4 and 55/1.8, Pancolars 50/1.8, japanese 55/1.4 lenses (Tomioka/Revueonon/Porst/Chinon/Sears/etc), Voigtlander Color Ultron 50/1.8 is also excellent.

Cheaper, but good, are Helios 44-2 and 44-3 58/2, Pentacon/Meyer 50/1.8, many japanese 55/1.7 and 55/1.8 lenses...

You can also use rangefinder lenses via adapter. E.g. Jupiter-8 50/2 is very cheap and it has slightly uncommon bokeh because of its Sonnar optical formula.

As for Nikon and Zeiss Contax 50mm lenses, you can taky any of them - all of them have very good reputation.

What is your price range?

At the moment I'm considering image quality only....
Then I'll consider price!
Otherwise I think that 300-400 euros could be my price limit, unless you give me a different advice!
Many thanks

I have a number of 50mm and IMHO, Planar 50/1.4 is the best that I've used. It might be a bit too contrasty though.

I also like my Nikon 50/1.4 ai(s?) and OM 50/1.4 (serial number>1100000). My S-M-C Tak has a yellowish cast, I am trying the "UV treatment" as we speak.

As far I can see from your signature,
you're playng with most of the 50's I'm considering to buy!
I'm looking for a medium tele for portrait work on m4/3:
could you post some shots to point out how the different 50's you have perform in portraits?
My first impression is that Planar 50 1.4, though astounding, could be too analitic...
while I'm really impressed by super taks: it's a matter of taste, and my taste says "go for the tak"....

Hi,

I don't have many worthy pictures to be posted here, perhaps someone else can give you some formal comparison. Here's a picture I took with Planar, I know the pic isn't very good, any fault is due to the user alone... but the lens really is amazing.

My tak is still yellowish, so I haven't taken much formal picture with it except some test shots. It has very smooth bokeh and the focus is butter smooth. The tak is probably the most well balanced 50s?

After a really huge research
I resolved to go for a Takumar 50mm 1.4.
And now the question:
which version (and mount) should I get?
Super Takumar 50 1.4;
SMC 50 1.4 (or S-M-C 50 1.4: any difference?)
or something else?
Which serial number is recommended?
Thanks in Advance

The Takumar is a great choice of lens.

The Super-Takumar - which isn't multi coated - may be slightly cheaper to buy, but my personal advice would be to hold out and find a nice S-M-C / SMC in good condition.

The S-M-C and SMC are essentially the same lens, both are multi coated, but the SMC (on the left in the photo below) is the last version of the lens and has a rubber focusing ring.

Good luck with your purchase Smile
