Morning broke with beautiful sunshine coming from low over the horizon, so I went out for a walk on the ice outside Helsinki, shooting more or less straight into the sun. I could not reproduce flare issues some users have reported, despite framing a helicopter flying straight into the sun with the 125/2.5.

I think I need to ditch the hoods to get flare (I'm using round LH-75 on 90 & 180 and square LH-75S hood on 125).

While these are not exactly comparable (different exposure and composition) I think they can be of interest to others. All have 5400K white balance, same sharpening (5 on a scale from 0 to 9) and same RAW settings. Uploaded original size (see link)

My personal favorite is the shot with the 90/3.5, although I fooled around with focus and think I did not shoot this at infinity. Nevertheless, it is a good example showing how the 90/3.5 renders color a little differently from its cousins. It seems that the 90 gives deeper blue and reds than the others, I need to investigate this. Days are short here, but on another sunny day I will bring out the tripod and do identical exposures.

great demo and superb shots Vilhelm!
maybe the sun is too weak in Finland to produce flare Rolling Eyes

That 125mm is a favorite of mine. I trust you exposed in aperture mode. I have some lenses that for whatever reason always over expose by a full stop or slightly more. I set the AV to -1 1/3 when using them. Oddly, that changes when at f/11 and I get under exposures.

Great pictures, Vilhelm. There is a lot of clarity in the pictures taken with the three Apo-Lanthar wonders, thanks to their apochromatic construction.

Cheers,

Abbazz

Manual mode, but I trusted the matrix metering. Very bright sun straight into the lens, most of the time I did not see the metering indicators. Forgot to set the D3 on 3F bracketing (-0.5, 0 and +0.5), it usually is a good idea with snow and shiny bright ice.

Poilu: I agree, sun is so low over the horizon and there is cold air over the ice, which makes for low haze on the horizon. I do look forward to taking the trio for a trip to Mexico next month though, nice to see some saturation as opposed to the monochrome winter scenes of Finland.

Some more shots from the same walk-around last Sunday morning. Some haze in the air in long distance shots like this. Could have brought my 49mm polarizer, but it is of such inferior quality I think I need to order a B+W before I put one on the APO-Lanthars.
