Some pics from the Canon Autoboy Luna XL...

Got this for 99c plus shipping (think it was $9) from Japan. It has a
panorama mode, but I've not found how to enable it. I have the Butkus
manual for a simpler model that doesn't have that feature. More of
the cheap Walgreens 400:






First two shots were Halloween at the big store in Huntsville, and the last
two were taken at the Albertville store last Saturday.

Well, it works so it's not bad for 99c but I'm not sure if it's worth the postage. Even at this size they look soft and show exposure problems.

And is it manual focus?

Cool! A music store complete with blue ukes. Hey, I think the pics looks pretty good for a 99-cent camera. Meant for snapshots anyway, so . . .

Paul, yes, they do look a little soft. This is a point and shoot with
autofocus only. It may be the camera, or camera shake on my part
when depressing the shutter. I bought this for the panorama mode
after seeing Nesster's Chinon pics using this function. But, the camera
arrived without owner's manual and I can't seem to find how to select
for pano mode. Using the "Select" button on the back of the camera
(has a little LCD display) does nothing, zip. The Date, Caption, and other
buttons work, however. Thanks for your comments.

Michael, thanks, for snapshots not bad, but not particularly good,
either. I'll play around with it a little more before I whing it into the
trash. Rather stylish looking cam, the Luna comes from the black crescent
around the lens clamshell.

For a film camera, a change in format shape can surely only be achieved by removing or placing a mask in the film gate (the same as with a folder). This could either be achieved by making the film gate wider, if the optics have a large enough image circle, or by putting a mask top and bottom, using only part of the frame.

I would look inside the camera to see if anything moves there. There is no point in a pano that is created by cropping top and bottom, you can do that yourself, so if there isn't room for the gate to open wider than 35mm the pano option would be nothing but a gimmick.

Paul - while I agree in principle re. cropping after the fact and throwing away good film area... there's something about these 90's gimmic panoramic cameras. Yes, the effect is via doors closing down the film gate... but you get a blurry transition, and a cinerama screen feel from the resulting shots. Plus, you just let your local drug store scan em.

Yes, it's a gimmic but a fun one.

Still haven't found how to do the pano mode, but this is from a roll I
dev'd tonight using Arista Premium 400 film, Barry's 2-Bath. I dev'd two
rolls in the same tank, the other roll had incamera meter problems and
a lot of it didn't turn out very well. The meter works pretty good in this
little guy:





Cat pic was maybe a little too close for minimum focus, but I like the
effect.

I like that wide angle effect. Dang, you'd think they would have made the panorama easier to find.

Jussi, I may send this cam to you to suss out. Have enough point and
shoots as it is. I was in the darkroom less than 8 mins to pop the caps
off of two 35mm rolls (one was being stubborn) load the reels and place
in tank. Loading 35mm is just so easy.

... finally ran a roll through the Autoboy Luna (I just love the name)... Ultramax 400.







The panorama switch turns out to be on the bottom, but the baffles give a very fuzzy border - a sharper one would make it look more like a movie screen.

The wide end of the lens shows a good deal of light fall off at the edges.

All in all, the zoom p&s cameras were a big step backwards from the fixed focal or dual focal ones.

Will have to try this film even tho it sounds like a shampoo. Really like
the wintry scene in the first. I found the build quality to be better than my
Ricohs, a shame it doesn't measure up in performance. Curious about
those fuzzy edges in panorama mode as these weren't there in your
Chinon pix.
