I won one of these on ebay with the usual trepidation about condition. It arrived this morning and is in immaculate condition with a very good condition case too. I am very pleased! I mainly got it to go with my ES/SPII but I'll take it out this afternoon with the K20D and post the results later.
Always nice to have some retail therapy.

Thanks all. I must admit I am very pleased with it. One day I'll do a bit of a comparison with the SMC-A version and the Vivitar close-focus versions I have. Much easier to use on the K20D than the Viv though.
The shot (no 3) was more or less "shot to the right" although I did allow some highlights to blow and had to turn the recovery slider in Lightroom to +24. I suppose I could up the Fill Light slider a little bit but at the expense of contrast. I am working on a rather poor laptop screen so I tend to judge things from the histogram a fair bit.
Best wishes, Kris. _________________ Kris Lockyear

I like all then pics. #3 underexposed? Hummmm....... the lights at the ceiling shoulb be overexposed with more exposition. Some difficult pic, I like the compromise solution.
With digital cam, can I do anything like the preexposed image, like Adams did. Sure in PP I can do this. Excuse mi ignorance, please.
Congrats !!!

I have a Super Takumar 28 3.5 that came with an SMC Takumar 55 1.8 (and a Spotmatic camera, all for $20, hehehe). I don't think I've used the 28mm at all though.
Every now and then I see someone else post photos with it and I'm determined to get it out and use it. I'm not a wide angle person though. Although this isn't technically that wide on my 450D. And I just never think of using this lens.
You've inspired me to take it out and play with it tomorrow! _________________ Canon 50D; CZJ Sonnar 135mm 3.5; SMC Takumar 55mm 1.8; Helios 44-2 58mm 2; Jupiter 37-A 135mm 3.5; Jupiter 11A 135mm 4; Pentacon 135mm 2.8; Nikkor-P 105mm 2.5;(Tokina) Vivitar 35mm 2.8; Tokina RMC 28mm 2.8; Vivitar 19mm 3.8; RMC Tokina 80-200mm 4.5; RMC Tokina 35-70mm 3.5; Panagor 90mm 2.8; Asahi Pentax extension tubes; 2xAuto Prinz teleconverter M42 |

Maybe I'll give it some time again too. I haven't been thrilled with it. I find it very difficult to focus - seems there is a lot of movement of the focus ring for little difference in focus. I like a lens that is in focus and out of focus within a small rotation. _________________ Regards,

Superb, superb... I don't understand why pentaxians don't tend to hold this one in the highest regard... perhaps compared with other Takumars and SMC's, the 28 doesn't do as concentrated color? But the resolution is there, and a very even rendering.
I have this lens, the Super version (which is now travelling with an SV to a list of pentaxforum members, probably gone for at least a year), and the SMC-A 2.8. In direct comparisons on a K100D, I could not see much difference; though with my samples the SMC-A resolved a smidge more, and the Super a hint more than the SMC (but really, this was only apparent in a slight difference in jpeg size). As the SMC-A doesn't give anything up but is faster, it seems as though the Takumars would be obsoleted. But the feel... _________________ -Jussi

When I first went digital, my wide Nikkors had awful CA. So, since I don't shoot wide much, I sold them and am still lacking in the wide department.
I see it's time to change that!

Cheap lenses are usually soft and glowy wide open, with lots of CA. If you're willing to close the aperture 2 stops for sharpness I'd recommend a Vivitar 2.8/28 Wide Angle or Close focus version made by Komine (with 28xxxxx serial number). I think this is a better lens than the more expensive 2.5/28 Kiron version. _________________ Peter - Moderator |

Oh, I do, I do. I have the SMC version, and the colors are . . . actually, I struggle to find the right adjective. Intense. Deep. Clear.
I think the reason it's not held in the highest possible esteem is that it's a relatively slow lens. But it's sharp from 3.5, and the colors are fantastic.

Well it stopped raining and I went out to play... see the equipment gallery thread ("Kris and his Pentax stuff" http://forum.mflenses.com/kris-and-his-pentax-stuff-t26007,start,15.html). A very pleasant afternoon even if the light was a bit flat!
Best wishes, Kris. _________________ Kris Lockyear
