I read Tom De Nies review here: http://www.mflenses.com/vivitar-400mm-f56-lens-review.html
I'd like to add this is really good build lens compared to all Japan 1:6.3 / 400mm Beroflex clones. It's also heavier.
Glass looks awesome. First let me say i do agree about chroma noise. But i wanted to post this topic since i do not agree about lack of sharpness.
This lens is really sharp wide-open. In very useful sens for me.
Here a sample shot in rainy day, wide open, Pentax K10D, ISO 400. All three the same photo: 1. 90% crop 2. mirrored crop with color histogram 3. resized and sharpened a bit.

Another with that famous chroma. Full crop and full size on aperture wide-open. Again very acceptable for me to get this detail at f=400mm. The distance here is around 60m. No post production. No sharpening. And not to forget still wet and foggy-rainy day.

Another sample. Full crop, and aprox. 1/6 still realtively useful. Ladies being many meters away since this leans means 600mm on Pentax K10D (Samsung GX10). Colors discarded again. HMS adjust resulted in a bit too harsh tones.

I recently bought a Vivitar 400mm f6.3. It's got the chroma problem big time (check out the pole at top cener in background!), but still gives useable images. This is on a D300, tripod, 1/200, f6.3.

Nice shot of a T-Bird,one of my all-time favorite designs.I had hull #205 from 1977-1982,it was the last Gig Harbor Ed Hoppen built and the 35th T-Bird Ed built...a close friend talked me into selling him the boat since I had two other boats at the time....a decision I long regretted.Someday perhaps I'll get a T-Bird again...but I'm still boat poor, having three sailboats. _________________ Trust that little voice in your head that says "Wouldn't it be interesting if...."
