Last summer, my mother and I came back to my home town - Kaiping. One day, we went to LiYuan Garden. The LiYuan Garden is in the same place where the one of the world heritage located - Kaiping Diaolou (multi-storeyed defensive village houses) and Villages. For more information, please visit the official site: http://www.kaipingdiaolouandvillages.com/.

LiYuan Garden was built by an oversea Chinese gentleman called Mr. Xie Wei Li and finished in 1936. This is a garden which mixes the Chinese traditional gardening, Southern China water-town style landscaping and Western architecture (just like the Diaolous). For more information, you can visit the same website as above (http://www.kpliyuan.com/english-html/kai.htm). The following are some of the photos in the Garden:

The Panwenlou Villa (left) and Jionglu Villa (Right)

The roof of the Panwenlou Villa

Statue of Mr. Xie Wei Li

Yupei Villa - a memorial to Mr.Xie’s beloved second wife

Inside the graden..

A gate in the garden

Yicui Pavilion and man-made canals

The dragon in the roof of Yupei Pavilion

Gold fishes

An old well

More photos…

Photograph is not allowed in the buildings so I cannot provide you any photos inside the mansions (many people just ignore the warning sign). Inside the Panwenlou Villa there installed tap water facility, flush toilet as well as water heater. These facility may be common in US or UK in the 1930’s but I can sure they were the only one whose possess these “modern” home facilities in my home town.

How do you feel about this garden?

Very nice presentation. The roof tiles in the first pictures, what material are they? They almost look like an aged brass/bronze/copper.

They are called the glazed tiles. They were used widely on the roof because they resists to water and strains. The glaze is mostly composite of copper dust, lead dioxide and some other minerals. On the other hands, glazed tile also makes the building more attractive.

The Kaiping Diaolou is not too far away from Hong Kong. If anyone here will travel to Hong Kong, it may be a nice idea having a visit to my home town.
