Hi,
I've got one of these myself, also in M42. After I bought it - cheaply - I went looking for additional information about it, and stumbled on this interesting discussion.
These seem to pop up a few times a year on eBay - always the 135/2.8, and always, I seem to remember, with the "10" serial number. I don't believe I've ever seen this styling in a Vivitar of a different focal length.
I also recall seeing a photo of a very similar lens - also a 135/2.8 - with a "6" serial code, which would have made it an Olympus-manufactured lens (assuming, of course, that it falls within the proper production-year window). But I couldn't tell, on the basis of that photo, whether it was identical to this one.
I'm sorry to say that this is one of the lenses I haven't yet done any serious shooting with, so I can't report on IQ. I can say that the few quick snaps I took when it arrived looked rather promising.
Cheers,
Jon |

Thanks Jon. That was the type of hope filled info I was looking for. This one was not as cheap as I would have liked but it was so unique I thought it a great addition to my collection. I'll get back with some photos after it arrives. Thanks again. _________________ Big Dawg |

I looked in on that discussion and That is the lens alright. I believe it is a Tokina as the ribbing is almost identical to all my TX and T4 Tokina made lens. Thanks again my friend..my knowledge has increased. _________________ Big Dawg |

I have one of these too. They are uncommon, but I would not say they are rare.
I have also seen different focal lengths in this series, including a 35mm, a 200mm and even a 250mm, all of which I lost unfortunately.
My theory is that they are pre-1970, or early enough in the 1970's to have missed the serial number code. The maker is of course mysterious, but I suspect either Komine or Kiron, outside guess Sun. They certainly are quality products.
The ribbed style was part of the Vivitar corporate style, and common to most earlier Vivitar lenses. It was easy for a major distributor like Vivitar to order lenses with particular cosmetics. The Vivitar T4 Tokinas for instance, are different from the same models of Tokina-made Soligors in exactly this way (among others). Tokina supplied them with different style knurling to different clients. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Wow, someone really got a beauty of a lens for quite cheap!
However, I do wonder - wouldn't the chrome ring (in strong sunlight, and at an angle, anyway) produce and project unwanted reflections on the lens surface? _________________ Lars

Interesting stuff.
I've also seen a somewhat similar silver-and-black mystery Vivitar 250mm, but it was (I recall) slightly different in some details; it had a cutout "window" through which the selected aperture was visible, in the manner of the Adapt-A-Matics or some of the Yashinon M42 lenses. Nice to know that there are other focal lengths out there with this very attractive styling.
(Oh, and I freely admit that it was the lens's looks that induced me to buy it.)
Cheers,

Was fortunate enough to receive one of these [serial number 105761] as part of a bundle of kit I won about 6 months ago - mostly junk apart from this and another Auto-Vivitar 2.8/135 [all black body with similar grooved focus/aperture rings, 378009118 serial number].
They nearly always rear their heads when it comes to me clearing out lenses, but they always get to stay at home. They both look and feel more expensive than they are, and are difficult to let go of

But I couldn't tell, on the basis of that photo, whether it was identical to this one.

Just reviving this thread (and quoting myself, which is probably poor form) to say that there's one of the "6" serial-number versions - an f/3.5 rather than a 2.8 - on eBay right now. And I still can't tell whether it's completely identical in styling to the "10" serial-number lenses, although it looks mighty similar.
