Hi

I have a Panasonic Lumix GF1 and want a macro lens for it with M42 thread. 50mm-85ishmm would be good. It will be mainly used for taking pics of flowers as the Canon 60mm macro that i had was awesome!

Makro Takumar f4/50mm
old preset version goes to 1:1
later version also great going to 1:2

The macro Takumar 50/4 are all based on the same optical formula. I have a S-M-C available for sale (70€). Other lenses meeting your criteria are the Vivitar/other brands 55/2.8 (goes to 1:1) or Tamron Adaptall 90/2.5 (1:2) Wink

1+
Had that 1:1 Takumar. Very sharp lens, pretty compact and light weight.

The ones already listed get +1 from me, the Takumar 50 and the Tamron 90 were ones I'd have suggested. Those Vivitars ought to be good also.

+1 for the Takumar 50/4 and the Vivitar 55/2.8 ...
As alternative, you could consider the Fujinon 55/3.5 Macro, it is quite underrated and may be found for cheap (got mine for 15 euros) ...

Cheers

It's a steinheil lens, great ones.

The Takumar's preset version is a hard to find one. And it's the only one that goes 1:1.
I bought meself a 55/2.8 Vivitar that goes to 1:1 without any extension rings. I paid 80 bux and I consider myself lucky with that price. I've seent it before going for 160USD.
Yashika has a 60/2.8 macro, horribly expensive, like 400USD or more.

S-M-C Macro Takumar 50/4 for sharpness and contrast
Volna-9 Macro 50/2.8 for bokeh

I recommend the Tamron Adaptall-2 90mm f/2.5 (or later f/2.8). Also makes a decent portrait lens, bokeh actually better than with e.g. the Jupiter-9.

The Volna-9 is also a very nice lens, but very short working distance for macro. It can also be a bit difficult to find at a good price.

I just Bought a Soligor 55 f2.8 Macro with the 1:1 extension in perfect shape for 99€! Great lens! Looking forward to posting some images soon!

The first test results: blazingly sharp at f2.8!

The Tamron gets another +1 from me, but it is only 1:2 reproduction.

+1 M42 Macro-Takumar 50/4 any version (1st version 1:1, and Super- and S-M-C 1:2)

With 2x crop factor of GF1, the lens gives same angle of view as 100mm lens on full-frame camera; good working distance for macro, and a little extra reach for portraits; good performance from macro through infinity.

Lens distortions are well-corrected; high resolution for bellows use; lens formula works well reversed.

There is one for sale in marketplace here at excellent price even with overseas shipping + vat.

My first acquisition was included in a lot with some other fine glass; at first I dismissed it by looks alone (tip: never go by appearances!) thinking that tiny lens can't be any good. Well, that set me up even better for the huge surprise when I got around to using it. The lens is one of my favorite for walks through the Garden.

Another thing to think about it when walk into the macro world is LIGHT, a lot of light.

My M42 macro lenses are as follows

Volna-9 (50mm/2.8 1:2 ratio) (preset)
Tomioka Yashinon (60mm/2.8 1:1 ratio) (preset)
Super-Macro-Takumar (50mm/4 1:2 ratio) (A/M switch)
Industar-61 L/Z (50mm/2.8 1:2 ratio) (preset) [not strictly macro lens but can be used with great results]
Fujinon EBC (55mm/3.5 1:2 ratio) (this is only Automatic m42 lens)
Macro-Takumar (50mm/4 1:1 ratio) (preset)

they all give excellent results

others that can be found in m42 mount (some already mentioned)
tamron 90mm/2.5 1:2 ratio

vivitar 55mm/2.8 1:1 ratio
vivitar 90mm/2.8 1:1 ratio
these two can be found under other brands like Soligor,Panagor,Quantaray,Elicar and so on

Asahi Super-Multi-Coated Macro Takumar 100mm f/4
Kiron 105mm f/2.8 1:1 ratio

these i have in other mounts and they also produce great results

general "rule" for recognizing 1:1 ratio lenses, seems to be that those lenses when focusing extend barrel to the front and to the back, while 1:2 ratio lenses extend only to the front when focusing

and there are two(three) lenses that get to excessive prices but seem to be unusable on dSLRs because their back elements hit camera mirror (or so i'm told, i don't own them)
Kilfitt Macro-Kilar 40mm f/2.8 or 3.5
Kilfitt Macro-Kilar 90mm f/2.8
