http://www.tenpa.us/en/index.htm

It claims that it can do 1.3x magnification.
Does anyone use this?

It sells for a little more than the Canon EX15

I use a Nikon magnifier on my D70s & my only complaint is while they do allow you more precise focus control, they make it a little harder to frame your shot as by magnifying the central portion of the frame, it cuts off the edges...

I use a Nikon-DK21 on my EOS 350D. Works great!

I use the same magnifier Carsten...I went that route as opposed to going with Katz-eye or Haoda screens...Works well enough for me also. I just am more careful when composing an image.

I have been using a Nikon DK-21M eyepiece for about a year. It gives a useful if modest (1.17x) magnification, but does crop out the edges.

I recently took it off to replace it with an interesting contraption - a rectangular-to-circular eyepiece converter, a circular rubber eyecup, and a circular FM2 eyepiece glass. This is to cut our stray sideways light, as I was finding it a problem seeing anything at all in some circumstances. Too early to tell if it works well yet.

I know that Koji has a nice method for this.

Surely he will chime in soon.
I don't use one yet unless it is with a right angle finder.
Mine is a Contax and has Magnification built in when desired.
An excellent finder but must be modified for Canon.

I didn't reply OP's question, for I was not sure "magnifying eyepiece" means
what. My understanding is this, "magnifying eyepiece" is an attaching scope
to a finder to increase X2 - X5 mag. Whereas the other means "diopter
lens" attached to the finder to collect eyesight, if the latter I can help some.

If the former, I do not have good experience. Though I have two for NIKON
and the other for PRAKTICA (do you know this camera, PB-mount one Laughing).
They are actually limited use, you can see only the centre portion of whole
image. For this purpose, today's dSLR have nice feature called "live view"
which can modify the magnification and focus point at your will. This is
the best method today for magnifying the view for digital cameras.

If the latter, I have several of them being used now.
NIKON's DK-17M for EOS_5D (yes, eyepiece cover of 5D is modified),
NIKON's DK-21M for D70, Olympus ZM-1 for EOS_350D. They all work
well, and Pegapearl's x1.35 magnifying & diopter adjutable one for M8.
The last one has some problems, which are not important just slightly
annoying, since diopter easily changes and some frame is out of sight.

You can see them on my HP.

Hi Koji: These are magnifying eyepieces, but less powerful than the ones you are thinking of ... less than 2X, to permit viewing of the entire screen while providing some enlargement for better viewing. Another example is the Olympus ME-1, which has a 1.2x magnification.

Me too!. I've never taken it out since I installed it. Better focusing, and one gets used to frame properly by taking an step back and forth....
Togheter with the Katz-eye focusing screen solved all my focusing problems.
Besides this, for additional help, I use some chipped adapters that give focus confirmation (for M42, for instance).

I got myself a Pentax O-ME53 magnifying eyecup last week. I have not really tested manual focusing on it yet. I did some research via the net and basically it came down to either Nikon DK-21M or the Pentax for my DSLR. I selected Pentax because I could use it without have to modify anything.

I'm finding it quite useful actually, since the image in the viewfinder has more contrast and clarity even when there is not strong sunlight.

The Pentax O-ME53 x1.17 magnifying eyepiece stay always on my cam.
It does help for manual focussing.
I don't mind loosing the view of the entire screen, I try to compose correctly and then in PP have just a bit room for cropping.

cheers,
Andreas

great advice Jesito, will try that stepping method!
and me too just recently installed a split focusing screen, cheap one from China.
Had to 'calibrate' it, put it into correct position, I added thin stripes of clear tape to it's edges, it seems to work very well now!
I am on Pentax, focus confirmation without chip, but it usually just gives me an idea and for real focussing I must trust my eyes

cheers,
andreas

Hello,

I bought a Pentax O-ME 53 for my K10D and it helped a lot in MF even with the Pentax standard focusing screen (currently i have a split image focusing screen, but the magnifier is still on the viewfinder) ...

As noted by other users, you will no longer see the edges of the pictures you are taking, because of the magnifying factor, but you can just compose the picture and crop the image later ...

Best regards

Hi,

And which one would you recommend for my Canon 30D? I changed already my focusing screen with a Katz-eye (wonderful).

Thanks,
Fer

Hi,
since Canon does not produce magnifiers anymore, I suggest to use the Pentax O-ME53. It fits all Canon cameras easily, it is well built and you can find it for about 25 Euros.

Ah, an old thread I missed. I have been wondering about this issue as well because the viewfinder in my Canon XS (1000D) is so small. I found an eyepiece magnifier on eBay called the Tenpa, and then did some googling about it. Most of the comments were positive. I'll probably buy one one of these days.

Click here to see on Ebay

Me too,

I also slightly shaved the lower back part of the ME-1(with a metal file) and now it fits like a glove on my 350D.
