Which Helios for my Canon 450D?

I am thinking my next lens purchase might be a Helios. Is there one in particular that you'd recommend for use with this camera?

I'm leaning towards a 44M-4 58mm. Are there different versions of the same model?

Are any of the Helios models easier to use than others? I'm just a novice photographer.

Any photos you'd care to share with your Helios on your 450D would also be appreciated! Very Happy

Thanks in advance.

There are serval versions of Helios 44s. They are all good but quality is various so try to find a reliable seller. And you need a adpater from M42 lens to EOS mount at least. Search "Helios 44" in this forum and you can find some photos believed is taken by Canon EOS. Mike

I liked the 44M version. Just plain M, not M4, etc.

It had 8 blades for nicer bokeh and an auto/man switch which made popping back to wide open for brighter focusing easier.

Really, they are all nice variations of a great lens. Hard to go wrong, really.

Mine is 6 blades of 44M-6 and I have no 8 blades version to compare. Here is latest shot with Canon 400D at about F2.8. Lens is soft when wide open but special twirling bokeh.

Mine is the 44M-6 too, which according to many has better coating and more sharpness than older versions. A shot wide open on my *istD I posted in the pets thread

I have the same cam and using Helios 44-3. You can see a set here :

I was completely manually focusing (no split screen or AF confirm chip), so some pics are not perfectly in focus

Thank you for sharing photos and for the information and opinions.

Djmike, thanks I will try to do a search. I go back and forth on whether or not I like the swirly bokeh, lol. Sometimes it seems distracting to me, but other times, as in that lovely photos of the flowers you posted, it seems to enhance the image. It gives it an artistic look/feel.

Tkbslc, since I'm just using the viewfinder of my 450D for focusing, brightness is important to me. And the 8 blades sounds good. I might have to take a look at the 44M then.

Andyw, yes cheap is a bonus! My photography budget is very limited so the price of the older MF lenses, especially when you consider the quality, is very appealing.

Ludoo, what a lovely shot of a beautiful dog! Hmmm, better coating and more sharpness seems important as well. Something else to think about.

Tharos, thanks for sharing that link. What lovely architecture! Most of the buildings here are so new and plain. The photos with the colourful trim and the stair rails were very interesting. And that little girl is so cute! What was the close up photo? Was that a straw broom?

Andyw, that photo with the 44/2 looks great. Sharp and the colour looks very rich. Did you do much to the colour/contrast in post processing?

I'm still as confused now, lol. All the photos look great. I guess perhaps it won't really matter which version I get after all. Maybe it will just depend on availability and price.

Thanks so much everyone.

ETA: Forgot to say that I do have a couple of M42 to EOS adapters.

I think your plan is sensible: look for trusted sellers, and check as much as possible that the glass is ok. I got a 44M-2 a while ago which looked in good condition, but checking the front glass with a loupe revealed lots of deep cleanng scratches. The latest models (-6 and -7) have probably more chances of being in mint condition as they have been used less, or are NOS items.

One other thing you might want to consider is filter thread sizes: later versions like my -6 have 52mm threads, earlier versions 49mm (or so I gathered from a few sources). If you already have a hood in one of those sizes, it might be enought to decide on one version.

One other thing you might want to check is the mount: some versions have a flange that prevents them to sit properly. See here.

I am not so sure but I guess it was the carpets edge. Many carpets all in one place.
