I Want to buy a 135mm for my Canon EOS 5D: Carl Zeiss Pentacon 135 2.8 or 135 f 3.5? Which is best? Thank you.

Hi!

The Pentacon 2.8/135 is called "bokeh-monster" because of its fantastic out-of-focus rendering.
The CZJ 3.5/135 is considered to be one the best 135mm lenses that you can get for reasonable money, sometimes. But there has been a hype about this lens.
The Pentacon will probably be cheaper.

The answer is Tair-11A 135mm f2.8

If you can find the steinheil (any version, macro, "D", the black is newer) 3,5 or 2,8, get it.

Whithout hesitate, among the best 135 in M42. A bit expensive.

Rino.

If price is any concern with CZJ then you can also consider Jupiter 37. It is consider to be CZJ clone. It is very sharp wide open with some CA though. Stop it down littlebit and volla !! CA is gone. And best part is that you can get it at half the price of CZJ.

Pentacon, I have heard that it is bit soft wide open and you have to stop down for sharpness. Both are great. It depends on you if you like speed or sharpness wide open. Jupiter's bokeh is also really good.

PS: Someone is selling one on marketplace with shipping included. His copy's serial is 86xxxx, suggesting that it could be MC version. Mine is 80xxxxx.

Carl Zeiss 135/3.5 and Pentacon preset 135/2.8 are both excellent and sharp. I prefer the Pentacon for portraits and Carl Zeiss for flowers, but either is superb.

Jupiter 11 and 11A are also similar clones of the Carl Zeiss and also produce lovely images. So many great 135mm lenses for so little money!!!

Pre-AI versions of Nikkor 135/3.5 are also CZJ clones. CZJ on the left, Nikkor on the right:

If price is not an issue, CZJ Sonnar 135/3.5 MC is the PICK. Embedded hood with 90cm min focus distance, well metal building, and small size. Mike

I have both and I prefer the Pentacon for portraits and CZJ for everything else. You also need to know that CZJ's aperture design sucks. It breaks or gets stuck easily.

I have the two, even did a test of both.
If you want to Sharp, the Sonnar is better. If you want a softer image, the Pentacon

And both had a very good service before the test.

I have both and use both. I tried the J37A and it wasn't bad but no need for that many 135s, so it drew the short straw.
