Ask Andy (F16Sunshine about compatibility issue) Jupiter-12 is pretty unbeatable I think Jupiter-8 is pretty average lens. If you find try to take a Jupiter-3.

Get an Industar-61, they are really good Tessar type lenses and usually cost about 10 (euros/dollars). They are very contrasty and sharp, really great for b&w.

Yup that's the truth. The one thing that might stop you is the post cost. It will be more than the lens cost.

I suggest you go ahead and try the J8. It can be really good or just OK WO but becomes great by f4-5.6 (copy variation).

J12 is a no go do to a deep set rear element. The CV 2.5/35 color Skopar is outstanding at it's FL for $200-$300.
It compares to pre asph Summicron at corresponding apertures.
An old Leitz Summaron 35 could be great also although not better or cheaper than the CV lens.

Have fun and congrats!!

it will be a normal. that is just the way i see. ok, the industar 61 ...

You know what though Paul.
I would really most highly recomend the Canon/Serenar LTM 1.8/50 as a first lens. Perfect match for the Bessa and also very affordable.
The build is superior to the Russian stuff. A lot of the J8's need to be shimmed to focus correctly.
The Industar has good glass but a crappy barrel and the Focus Cam is not to smooth sometimes.
Lots of lens chices out there. Take your time.

f16, i googled the canon, and they are very dear, starting at 150. i think i'll chance an fsu lens or two, unless a cv lens shows up at a decent price ...

Living in the US has its advantages: look at this, or this. UG-rated lenses might have a few scratches, but then they might be ok, if you can call to check on their condition you might score a good lens at a nice price. And in any case a Canon 50mm with a so-so lens might still be better than an FSU lens.

Fish
I have an Industar 3.5/50 I will send you for postage.
Maybe then you can asses and wait out for the perfect lens.
Send me a PM if interested.

This is the first photo I took with my Fed-3 and I-61 2.8/52mm... The Ukranian guy who sold it to me showed me how to work the thing & load film, I step out, across the train tracks, aim, shoot:

You're getting me eager to try out this kit again.

thanks, nesster. i don't doubt at all the capabilities of the lens. there is the issue of rangefinder accuracy, that slight shimming can take care of.

Congrats, Paul, looking forward to the pix! Cool

thanky. it'll have to go hard to beat the minolta a5 and the spot.

Congrats on the Bessa.

As for the soviet lenses there might be the problem with focus accuracy. I wouldn't by one without testing as long as they are not dirt cheap.

The FSU lenses with M39 are built to the contax standard which is slightly different to the leica standard. If you have a little time to read there is an article about it:
http://www.dantestella.com/technical/compat.html

As I told allready in the other thread I tested the Jupiter 8 and the Industar 61 lens. I had two Jupiter 8. For the 1st the focus was way off and so I sent it back to the seller. The second was better but soft wide open. The Industar 61 lens (my copy) was much sharper than the Jupiter but the build quality of the barrel was mediocre and focusing was not what I call smooth. Nothing comparable to the Cosina/Voigtländer lenses.

Shimming the J-8 for exact focusing is an easy job: the fron of the lens unscrews just by twisting it with your hands, and inside you will find the brass shims used by the factory. Add or remove shims (paper, aluminum foil, etc) until focus is correct.

I might be wrong but when I understood the article at datestella correct than by shimming the lens it is either possible to adjust close focus or infinity (or something between) and not the whole range.

Anyhow DOF may cover those tolerances in practice especially when using the slower lenses.

Well yes, people usually "tune" Jupiter 8s and 3s for close focusing, and rely on DOF for infinity shots, as the difference in focus is not that much and only apparent shooting near subjects.

But sometimes you get a lens which is totally off, and fixing it by adding or removing shims is a better option than returning it to the seller, especially if it comes all the way from Russia. Smile

aha! thank you, gentlemen. excuse my ignorance, but what does DOF mean?

PostPosted: Thu Feb 04, 2010 12:49 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Depth Of Field

PostPosted: Thu Feb 04, 2010 2:08 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

well, duh on me. what a goober. i KNOW about depth of field but not DOF? how is that possible? Shocked

I was just over at RFF. It looks like the other fanboys are preaching the Canon 1.8/50 also.
It's a great lens. You should track one down for sure (skip the J8 gamble).

I can't comment on the Skopar 28 but the tiny Color Skopar 35 is definitly my favourite lens for the Bessa. As for the pricing I paid 150 british pound for a new about 2 years ago.
I also tried the faster Ultron 1.7/35 but this lens is blocking some of the viewfinder which I found a bit distracting and so I sold it.

thanks, ianus. i hope the 35 bidding stays within my budget. i still would not mind trying a jup 8. i like character ...
