Just out of curiosity, I set up a detail test with the Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 pre-Ai vs. my Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G AF-S using a Nikon D3 (full-frame).

subject: black bar code on light grey box (Nikon SW-10H diffuser)
numbers in image measure about 1.8 millimeters in height
manual focus with Live View
focusing distance 0.25m
2 remote triggered SB-800 flashes diffused, both at 1/8 output
tripod, self-timer, exposure delay mode to get rid of mirror slap
identical post-processing, sharpening set to 5 on scale from 0..9
white balance 5200K
aperture f/8, shutter 1/200s, ISO 200
100% crop of center, focus in both is on "4"

Yes, there are some factors in the equation which aren't comparable; focal length difference and equal focusing distance makes subjects appear at slightly different magnification ratio.

The Nikkor 55/3.5F I got on eBay for EUR 39. The 60/2.8G costs EUR 549 ie. fourteen times more. Unbeatable price-quality ratio from a lens that was designed in the 1950s.

Sharpness: newer lens wins, difference bigger wide open
Vignetting wide open: older lens has less (slower lens less vignetting)
CA: not really an issue on either lens
color: older gives slightly cooler tones
Distortion: None or perhaps mathematical; I shot grids and saw maybe minimal pincushion on newer lens (I am not sure as would require software to calculate distortion percentage when both lenses are practically zero)

Looks like you get better contrast with the 55mm Smile. I think it's one of the all-time greats.

Fantastic lens, I agree!

I have serial 2516xx which puts it at about 1967 manufacture date. Some dust inside, no fungus or haze, one faint cleaning mark on front element.

It's the first lens I bought for my FE, thanks to the folks here.

My 55 Micro Nikkor's S/N is 194xxx. After a bit of research, thanks to the Photosynthesis site in NZ, I find that my lens was probably made in 1963 or 1964. It may be old, but it's one of the two sharpest lenses I own (the other is a 90mm f/2.5 Tamron SP).
