Muchas gracias, muy interesante.

I wonder why they sold two versions of 1.8/50 and also two versions of 2.8/50 ? It would seem to be too expensive to keep so many different designs in production.

They made Pentacon from different companies, perhaps this was the reason.

Petzval 1840,

I have the same catalogue and it had been transcribed into html and put online here.

http://www.praktica-users.com/lens/catalogues/1978.html

Luisalegria,

The two versions of both 50/1.8 and 50/2.8 were sourced from Görlitz and Jena. In the earliest days, camera makers made cameras and sourced lenses from whoever they liked; the idea of camera makers making their own "original" lenses is actually a relatively new phenomenon. The camera-making operation of Pentacon (centred around the KW facilities) sourced lenses from Meyer and Zeiss, it was its decision to have duplicates of 50mm lenses in the same apertures at different price points, and not at the expense of the company.

It was in 1968 that Pentacon acquired Meyer, thus acquiring the rights to put the Pentacon name on the lenses. It was much later, that Pentacon sourced its lenses from other makers, such as Sigma, Cimko etc and put the Pentacon name on them. Nothing unusual about that.

Attila,

The page you linked to gives very poor information. The firm traded under the name of VEB Pentacon Dresden for only two relatively brief periods. Here is a run-down.

In 1959, VEB Kamera-und Kinowerke Dresden was formed by the amalgamation of these companies:

VEB Kinowerke Dresden (formerly Zeiss-Ikon)
VEB Kamerawerke Niedersedlitz (formerly KW)
VEB Altissa-Kamerawerk Dresden
VEB Welta-Kamerawerke Dresden
VEB Aspecta-Kamerawerke Dresden

When VEB DEFA-Gerätewerk in Berlin-Fredrichshagen was acquired in 1964 it became VEB Pentacon Dresden.

The company changed its name again, in 1968, to Kombinat VEB Pentacon Dresden after the acquisition of VEB Feinoptisches Werke Görlitz (formerly Hugo Meyer who had acquired Kurt Bentzin).

Carl Zeiss Jena acquired the Pentacon group, along with nearly all the photographic manufacturing firms in the DDR in 1985, so Pentacon reverted to is original style of VEB Pentacon Dresden, until reunification.

In addition to Pentacon, the firms acquired by Carl Zeiss Jena during the 1985 merger included:

VEB Jenaer Glaswerk
VEB Rathenower Optische Werke (Hermann Duncker)
VEB Freiberger Präzisionmechanik
VEB Feinmess Dresden
VEB Feubnesszeugfabrik Suhl
VEB Pentacon Feinoptisches Werke Görlitz (formerly Meyer)
VEB Kamerafabrik Freital
VEB Hochvakuum Dresden
VEB Forschungszentrum Mikroelectronik Dresden
VEB Elektromat Dresden
VEB General-Auftragnehmer Elektroinvest Jena

Hope this is of interest.

I wonder what the premium was for the electric versions at the time?

Hi all the people:

Shrek:

The importance of the electrical transmission of the information of the opening of the diaphragm to the camera was very important: it was allowing to measure with all accuracy the exhibition without need to close the diaphragm.
I have used this electrical Prakticas and they are fine very much.

Bests Regards: David

I just grabbed a copy of Amateur Photographer from 1975, in one of the dealer ads, the Pentacon 135/2.8 auto was priced at 21.50 pounds, the electric version 29.45. Similarly the 29/2.8 auto was 20.95, electric 28.95.
