It's expensive on Ebay too, buy Helios-40-1 instead for half price. I had both and kept 1st version. _________________ -------------------------------

Personally I'd get the modern Samyang/etc 85mm f/1.4 instead of the Helios-40-2. This may even be cheaper these days, and performance is probably better, too, except if you are a fan of swirly bokeh. |

Thanks Attila for posting these links. The "Young Cyclops" is awesome -- just a bit overdone in post processing IMHO.
Cheers!

The Samyang is a very nice lens but it has nothing in common with the Helios, except the focal length. The Samyang is too square, we love the Helios because of its flaws.
Cheers!

I understand and maybe agree if it would be the only 75-90 in your kit.
The Samyang is just too safe. It is like shooting an AF lens.
The Helios is not just good for this wild Radial bokeh.
It is very sharp stopped down a bit.
The lens has other flaws that "melt down" cold captures to give them life.
I like the way one can use the flare of this lens to give space and change the scene.
here is a rejected shot for an example ......no eyes is legal

I wish I could share everyone's enthusiasm. My opinion of the Helios 40 is too expensive, too heavy, too soft, and hideous bokeh that ruins photos. But, glad you guys are having fun with it. _________________ Canon 30D + some AF and MF lenses |
