Not an artistic work, just to show what this lens can achieve at different apertures, all pics can be viewed at full res by click :

f/1.8

This lens can be razor sharp at f5.6 and good enough at f1.8 these samples are not remind me to my copy. Something wrong or whether was dull ?

Front lens has some marks, and f/5.6 was shot at 1/50s, which can explain the slight loss of sharpness Wink

Very Happy handshaking okay. I found this lens beautiful indeed for animals, plants. I couldn't use as well for humans.

I used it only for portraiture Razz When I'll have time, I'll compare my three 85mm Smile

I love that lens. Beats the other 85 taks, imho.

Would you say this lens has better image quality than the Jupiter-9 85mm?

Like those images a lot especially at f5.6.

Not necessarily. CarbonR's lens is the old Auto Takumar, which has the same optical design as the Super-Takumar 85/1.9 and Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 85/1.9 (5 element/4 group). It's a good lens, but not stellar.

The sharpest Takumar 85mm is the later Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 85/1.8, also sold as SMC-Takumar 85/1.8, with a largely improved design featuring 6 elements in 6 groups.

As for the oldest of the bunch, the Takumar 83/1.9, it is not known to be razor sharp, but it is a very nice portrait lens, having a pure Sonnar design with 7 elements in 4 groups.

Cheers!

Abbazz

Auto Takumar 85/1.8, Super Takumar 85/1.9 and S-M-C Takumar 85/1.8 don't have the same optical formula. The S-M-C 85/1.8 and the 83/1.9 are Sonnar type and there is no SMC Takumar 85/1.8 Wink

Cheers Abbazz that's very interesting. I'm so very new to all this so i'm gathering info and recommendations for the different lenses so i can get 'good gear' from the off. I'll add the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 85/1.8, and SMC-Takumar 85/1.8 to my list of future purchases. Cool

Please refer to the book pictured in your avatar, or to the excellent website of Frank Mechelhoff. As stated in my post, he Auto Takumar 85/1.8, Super Takumar 85/1.9 and S-M-C Takumar 85/1.9 (and not 1.8 ) share the same optical design (No.3, 4 & 5 on Frank's web page linked above).

The Sonnar type lens is the Takumar 83/1.9, dating from 1957, which is scarce in M37 mount and even more rarely encountered in M42 (No.1 & 2 on Frank's web page).

As for the SMC Takumar 85/1.8, I know very well it exists as Ï have one!

Cheers!

Abbazz

The Ultimate screwmount guide doesnt say that Auto 85/1.88 ans Super 85/1.9 have the same optical formula, maybe there is only minor changes ?
I never saw a SMC Takumar 85/1.8, only S-M-C (Super-Multi-Coated) Takumar 85/1.8, or SMC Pentax 85/1.8 Wink

As I know, there are 3 designs, which were used for screw-mount Takumars:
  1. Sonnar 7/4:
    • Takumar 83/1.9 (M37/M42)
  2. Sonnar 5/4
    • Auto Takumar 85/1.8 (M42)
    • Super-Takumar 85/1.9 (M42)
    • S-M-C Takumar 85/1.9 (M42)
    • SMC Pentax M 85/2 (K) [recalculated]
  3. Planar 6/6
    • S-M-C Takumar 85/1.8 (M42)
    • SMC Pentax 85/1.8 (K)
  4. Ultron 6/5
    • SMC Pentax DA Limited 70/2.4 (K)
  5. Ultron 7/6 (different designs, but the same 7/6 concept)
    • SMC Pentax FA Limited 77/1.8 (K)
    • SMC Pentax A* 85/1.4 (K)
  6. 8/7 (exotic design)
      Pentax FA* 85/1.4 (K)

good decision! but I'd think one of them will be enough Wink they don't come cheap Crying or Very sad
Many people rave about the Jupiter-9. Well, it is a cheaper alternative for a fast 85mm lens, but if you want sharp photos you must stop it down quite a bit. The softness at wider apertures may be wanted for portraits and many love it's bokeh. The Takumars, specially the S-M-C Takumar 1.8/85 is a better lens, though of course that also depends on personal taste.
( if you want a J-9 I have two and will sell one once back in Europe by middle of October, may offer it at the marketplace here first anyway before, if necessary, going ebay )

I bought an Auto-Takumar 85/1.8 a few weeks ago at a local antique shop. I needed a fast short telephoto and for $25 US in original leather case I thought it would be a good buy.

This lens is superb for my needs; even wide open it is fairly crisp. With extensions it makes a good macro lens as well. I'm using it on my Nikon D40 with a corrective adapter, but the extra glass doesn't seem detrimental. Overall, a very impressive lens.
