Hi, does anyone owns the Canon FL 58mm f/1.2? I noticed a second ring besides the aperture setting ring and I am wondering what it is for. If anyone knows please help me out cause I can not find any info about it.
Thanks, Jerry. |

I think it uses a two-ring system for selecting the aperture; one ring limits the aperture range between wide open and the aperture selected (but does not actually stop down the aperture), while the other ring stops down the aperture (but can only move between wide open and the aperture selected with the other ring). The idea is to select the desired shooting aperture with the limiter ring, focus wide open, and the stop down with the other ring (without having to look where it's at; it stops at the pre-selected shooting aperture). |

Hi Arkku, thanks for your reply. I tried that and indeed it is some sort of locking mechanism prefenting to select a wider diafragm then 1 step/stop. Wonder if I will ever use that |

Arkku is quite correct. On the early Canon slr cameras that was how you got to judge depth of field at the working aperture. Later ones had a stop-down preselector.
FL lenses won't give full aperture ttl metering on the later bodies - the ones they were supplied with originally didn't have ttl metering, of course.
A very nice lens to own - one to treasure if it's in good condition. _________________ Stephen

If I am correct, one is an aperture control ring and the other one is Breach Mount ring,
which may be a chrome metal with no feature. Canon FD lenses are not too old to have
pre-set aperture ring. _________________ Our Home Page has 18,200 photos in 575 directories today.

This is a picture of the lens and the two rings. I believe it is to lock the step down of the aperture as it acts that way.

This is not correct.
Arkku is correct. It is to lock/stop the Aperture.
JerryMK says he has the FL lens, not the FD. |
