I was dubious about this lens, version 23A, on previous usage it exhibited a lot of purple fringing and was soft at 300mm.
This time round I used a UV filter as a test, to see if I could banish the purple fringing for good, and it worked well! In the harsh, harsh midday sun it still produced CA, but to a much lesser extent. I also found, as before, that 290mm is the limit for my copy, before it goes to mush! By the way, this lens is a pain in the arse to carry around, especially attached to the camera! It bashes every thing
More of these Palmyre Zoo photos for the gallery later

One of my favourite zooms and I can forgive it being a heavy SOB for the results it produces.
I just bought a Tammy 70-300 AF plastic job and it must be at most half the weight, but the sheer solidity of this one actually helps, in my opinion. _________________ Dave - Moderator

I have one unfortunately broken, usable in macro only.
But its not really very large or heavy for a 300mm f/5.6 (all right, its a 5.4). Quite petite really. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Shrek, you are recalling very pleasant memories about my visits at the Palmye Zoo, too many yaers ago with my boys. Must have some transparencies of that days, but don't know to find them fast. |
