with all the discussion of 50mm lenses... which one of these below do you folks prefer? and why?

I know this is an informal comparison, and the subject isn't exactly a good one.

Hi Orly,

#1 or #3, but the color cast should be corrected.

#1 for me.

It's hard to pinpoint, but the colours are the most natural-looking of all three. 2 & 3 look really wishy-washy to me - but then again I don't purport to have the best colour-vision and haven't calibrated this monitor in a couple of months...Embarassed

As colours can be corrected in post processing, and if we stick to stamp sized prints, I'd say #3 because of the bokeh. Though #2 might have better bokeh quality... hard to say Wink

All of these were AWB under fluorescent lighting. ISO 1600.

Interesting choices Smile

If I identified the lenses would it change the ranking?

#1 Pentax FA 50/1.4

#2 CZJ Pancolar 50/1.8

#3 Pentax Super-Takumar 50/1.4 (UV bleached but still has a cast)

all wide-open.

I like the sharpness combined with lower color contrast of #2.

Personally, no change of ranking for me - to my eyes, #1 still stands out more.

Have never heard of this lens before now Embarassed

Bravo! Encore, encore! (I want to see more of these 3-lens same-shot comparisons where the lenses are anonymous!)

I like #1, looking at the contrast detail on the button on spray-can, and detail in objects on shelf at the far back.

#2 shouldn't have been included because dof is different. or the 50/1.4s should've been stopped down to F1.8.

#3 might be indescernable from #1 if lens element wasn't yellowed.

For one mad moment I thought those spray cans said; "Viagra."

"What will they think of next" was my first thought - followed closely by "Where exactly are you supposed to spray that thing?"

Peterm,

It is a spray starch. It will work for your intended application I'm sure, if you use enough.

are these nice lenses really made in the fifties?

@Mal1905

the Pentax FA 50/1.4 is Pentax's current AF 50mm lens. It's a 7 element 6 group design just like the K 50/1.4 and the M 50/1.4 (which are manual focus) and shares their 0.45m closest focusing distance.

If you believe Mike Johnston (who loves the Super-Takumar), the late 7-element Super-Takumar lent its optical formulation to all succeeding Pentax 50mm f/1.4 makes. My Super-Tak also has a 0.45m CFD!

So you could say the FA 50/1.4 is just the AF version of the Super-Takumar and with a better coating...

here's the FA 50 with the metal screw-in hood of the Super-Takumar, just for laughs..
