Here's another one from the depths of my hard drive.
Again, this is a scan of a medium format transparency, but this time
from a Pentax 645 that takes a bit of a smaller overall image at
6cm x 4.5cm in size.
The smaller transparency means that the camera can be smaller than
a lot of other medium format cameras as well, and that there are more
exposures available per roll of 120 film. This makes the Pentax 645 a
very good choice for "quick" shots, and can actually be used even as a
street camera!
However, I like to use a tripod and "settle in" to try to
compose landscapes, and then I can use lower speed films such as
Velvia 50 or Provia 100. The fine grain can give some very nice
enlargements.
In this case, I used Provia as I wasn't feeling that the colors needed
to be showcased. The fine grained Provia gives only very slightly
saturated colors, so is great for showing detail and textures, as I felt
that these California Mussels had. I also feel that the 75mm lens has
decent (not spectacular, but decent) fall-off of out of focus areas.
Once more, the web loses detail. The transparency shows superb
sharpness in the focused areas with good microdetail. When looking
at the slide against a lightbox, or projected onto a screen, it feels
like I can "dive in" and pick those mussels off the rock! That is one
of the joys of medium format.
