I finally managed to get a working (long story...) 4X5 lens for a reasonable price, a Caltar 165mm f6.3. I've read REALLY good things about this lens on the Internet (part of why I bought it) and also about the shutter's reliability.
I read that the lens has a 206mm image circle, but less of a usable circle due to mechanical vignetting.
Has anyone used it? Any reviews or ideas about how much of a usable image circle the lens has?
I was unable to find specifics about the usable image circle, but found a reference to about 25 degrees of tilt in each direction. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/hancockDavidM |

well if its a tessar, the image circle should be in mm just slightly larger than the focal length in mm. _________________ ===========

I miss my large format days, but I sold off all my large format cameras and lenses about 5 years ago ( didnt want to
keep on with the wet processing after I got used to a dslr, even though its not the same ). Anyway, from what I recall
was if you shot straight on on 4x5, you could get away with a 135mm tessar but with no movements. At 135mm if you
needed movements, then you needed a symmar type lens. I used to have a 210mm tessar that had tons of movements
on 4x5 that I liked, I think it was a xenar f4.5. If you indeed have a 165mm tessar type lens you will have some movements,
but not a ton, on 4x5. _________________ ===========

I expected this lens would basically give me an understanding of how movements worked and let me do some landscape and studio-type work, which is my goal right now. I did some more poking about and someone who had this lens said is had about 85% of the movement range as his 210mm Schneider Symmar, which would be huge. It worked out to about 20 degrees in any direction. Apparently, the Seikoska shutters don't have as much of a mechanical vignette as the Copals. I don't quite know what that means yet, but it sounds like I'll have fund getting to learn this lens' qualities. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/hancockDavidM |

No, a tessar only has about 55 degrees of coverage whereas a symmar is about 70 degrees. A 165mm tessar wont have nearly the coverage of a 210mm tessar, let alone a 210mm symmar... _________________ ===========
