All,

Could any one comment on the Leitz Vario Elmar R 75-200mm f4.5? I have the Tamron Adaptall 80-210mm f3.8-4(the 103A version) and a RMC Tokina 80-200mm f4.5.

Would I gain much from this Leitz when comparing to the two lens above? Links to pictures taken by the lens would be appreciated.

thanks for looking,

Cheers

I used the 75-200mm f/4.5 Vario-Elmar-R for a couple of years, and found that in most situations it was a good but not great performer.

The things I liked:

adequate sharpness
minimal flare
light weight

what I didn't like:

ugly bokeh
difficult to use polarizing filters
Minolta construction isn't up to Leica standards

I prefer the Leica 80-200mm f/4 Vario-Elmar-R by a wide margin. It fixes all the problems I had with the 75-200 and is much sharper, almost up to Leica's APO standards.

Isn't the 4.5/75-200 the one that was produced and built my Minolta?

It's one of several that were produced by Minolta. It had some mechanical differences and optically it was a cherry-picked clone of the Minolta-branded lenses.

The zooms made by Minolta for Leica are:

80-200mm f/4.5
75-200mm f/4.5
70-210mm f/4

35-70mm f/3.5 (55mm filter version)

and minolta made the optical unit of the later 35-70mm f/3.5 (60mm filter version).

Doug,

thanks for the info. I guess I should save up a bit more $ for the better 80-200/4

Cheers,
