Kiron 2.8/105mm wide open (and some other) test(s)

Just a quick test showing the performance of my Kiron 2.8/105mm lens wide open on a Nikon D200 handheld, ISO 200 on a very windy day (maybe to compare with my CV 125mm SL shots). Full size images just scaled down, nothing else done to them:

Bokeh:

at 1:1 (fully extended helicoid):

indoor at artificial light:

...more to follow later time permitting...

So if you ask me, quite a decent performance and pleasant bokeh considering its current market price (ca $400 currently) - not the CV 125mm leage or Zeiss MP 100mm ZF of course...

added:

Kiron-bokeh anyone...??

Well, yeah the bokeh is OK, but the sharpness at f2.8.... Question Question
Compare that to the CV Makro-Lanthar 125mm SL at f2.5

LCA is there, but seems to disappear from about f5.6 onwards:

f2.8

f4

f5.6

Infinity sharpness (quasi, at about 25meters)

overview:

details (100% crops), left to right, top to bottom: f2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16

corner:

Color fringing at f2.8 to f4, gets decent from about f5.6 onwards, f8 seems to be the sweet spot. (the quality decline at f16 may be due to the longer exp. time and handheld shooting...)

I receive my unit only one week ago and the first impressions are very good.

I can't get out with the lens 'cause I have the university exams along may-june, but i'm sure that i do a very nice purchase!

Regards

PD. At f8 is SUPERB Laughing

Could be very interesting to see a comparison with the 125mm Lanther! I really enjoy my Kiron but the Lanther is the dream macro lens.

I think the price of the Kiron is more like $2-300 if you avoid the expensive BIN eBay offerings, and that makes it even more interesting Very Happy

Well had you looked through the recent postings or plug in "125mm" into the search box you cannot overlook that (my) long posting on the CV Apo-Lanthar 125mm SL shot wide open... Wink
But I know now why you did not find it - "Lanther" does not exist, that rare earth element is called Lanthar....you're excused Wink

I am impressed that there is not a huge amount of difference
in sharpness between wide open and stopped down. Shocked

The images themselves, especially the first one, are magnificent
in their own right. You make ANY lens sign, as far as I'm concerned.

Screamin Scott: I can certainly see why you keep the Lester Dine on
your camera, especially if it's anything close to kds' lens here.

...And I spelled it wrong twice, no excuse for that Neutral hehe. I found your other post with the Lanthar, it's hard to say but I think the Lanthar has the edge so it could be fun to se to similar pictures Wink

bokeh night shot(s) added to the original posting.

Thanks for the comments - appreciate it.
[@Lawrence - you shouldn't say that, your images always amaze me!!!]

I guess I still want to keep my CV 125mm (LOL)...waiting for my Zeiss 2/100mm ZF to arrive - THAT will be the BATTLE!!

For general uses, MP100 is much better than MAL125, since at infinity
focus MP100 @f2 is better than MAL125 @f5.6 in my case. Actually MP100
at f2 & infinity is unexpectedly (<-me) VERY sharp indeed.

The most of macro lenses are designed to perform optimally at 1:10
magnification ratio, but MP100 is good at infinity too. Similar one is
Leica's AME 100 macro, and Elmarit 60/2.8 which does quite well for
landscape too.

Bokeh are different for these two lenses (MP100 & MAL125), hard to
pick which is better YMMV.

...but MP100 does only 1:2 (0.5x) as compared to CV 125mm SL which focuses to 1:1 (1x) - a real show stopper (at least for me)
Not sure what made Zeiss (Cosina) make that decision.... Crying or Very sad

Klaus,
I agree with your point about 1:1 being a "show stopper"...I have several macro lenses, but reach for the Dine lens for that simple fact as the others macros's only go to 1:2...It does make a difference !

LOVE the bokeh on BOTH lenses. Beautiful circles and I like the nearly complete absence of "border rings" on the circles.

Sharpness is certainly obvious in these iterations of the glowing rope, klaus. Shocked

These are really suberp images, and that makes this a a lot of fun to see.

@Scott: absolutely, I just don't like having to toad a 52mm PN11 extention ring around - just nice to grap the cam + macro lens and use great light for some (macro) shots! 1:2 just doesn't do it. They made the same mistake (IMHO) with the "compact" version of the 60mm Makro-Planar which could also only do 1:2.

@Laurence: Yep, when I once found out about the light on my balcony, I really like using that for testing out bokeh.
