I have the jupiter-9, and can buy a vivitar 85/1,8 pre-set at $ 59.

Is it good to do this?

I don't want to spend money if there is no an important difference between both lenses.

What suggest to me?

Thanks. Rino.

apples and oranges.
Rino, $59 is a deal for any 85mm lens.
Just take it.

The Vivitar will certainly give you a quite different sort of image to the Jupiter, and $59 isn't an unreasonable price if it's in nice condition. I would suggest that if you enjoy making comparisons, then buy it:you'll certainly recover the money when you sell it. But if you enjoy the images from the Jupiter and don't really want to spend the money, then be happy to pass it over and keep going as you are.

$59 for the Vivitar is a great investment, and you can play with it for a while.

Thanks for all, guys.

I'm happy with my j-9, but I love the range 50-90 lenses.

Here (Argentina) and in this moment $59 are.......well I can say that is
a sum of money like taking care of. Although if it is worth it, Ahead!

Some tell me when I want to compare both lenses that "different sort of image" or "apples and oranges"

So, Which are the differences between both? Contrast? Resolution?

THANKS AGAIN.

Vivitar is more rare than Jupiter (it's more rare than majority M42 85mm lenses including Helios or Biotar). I had two copies and both of them performed identically optical-wise (I can't say this about Jupiter). The bokeh of Vivitar is also much smoother and OOF lights a lot softer and rounder. It's one of my best 85mm lenses - nice soft bokeh and very sharp stopped-down.

Here are some samples:

as for resolution and contrast: is this enough for you? Wink

I highly recommend this lens. The price is a steal.

Mine arrived today, looks like it's had some use and there was a small amount of hairy like fungus inside. However, I pulled out the dividers and had the front element out within 2 minutes Smile It's cleaned up really nicely. There is some oil on the pre-set blades (no problem) but the circle isn't completely round, so I may need to take the blades out at some point...

Looks like an old Tokina design to me, although I'm sure someone will know better here Smile

I think the sign of a good lens is nice glass and a worn focus ring. Looks like you have a winner!

I dont think its a Tokina. Tokina would start at 37 correct, not 73?
Perhaps one of these?

I decided yet:

I reserved it, the seller give me his OK.

The next monday I will have it in my hands at $59.

In this forum is the reference for all my lenses purchases (can't be in another way).

Thanks for all guys.

Rino.

Good luck Rino !

That Vivitar looks like its from before the serial number series (pre-1970). This is one of the first lenses sold under the Vivitar brand btw, and none of these early preset Vivitars are common. They would make a good collection.

I have the 180/3.5 of this series and it isn't very good. I hear the 200/3.5 is quite good.

So its not possible to tell from the serial number who the maker was. I really would like to know who made them !

Its possible that Tokina made an 85mm lens in the 1960's, but I have not seen one that was certainly a Tokina.

This lens is much older than the Vivitars serial numbering system. SN means nothing.
