Not a great fan of zooms , but a great fan of all that comes cheap Laughing
In this light i decided to give this one a try
Big heavy piece of glass with 72mm filter thread
Nice internal non extending zoom
great macro ( close focusing really) setting
m42 with auto or manual aperture
6 bladed aperture

There is some play in the front barrel , not much but enough to make me want to fix is this normal?
it looks like quite a complicated beast to dismantle so i would rather only do it if i must
Advice from anybody with experience with this zoom would be appreciated
the first shots seems promising and it's really sharp for a zoom

also very little difference in sharpness between open and f 8

Something i find quite weird is that it tends to underexpose slightly on the 20D if you open it up to 3.5 ??? Surprised

some handheld test shots at f8 at 35mm and 2nd one 105mm with crop

Looks usable. Thinking about that plastic bottle shot, maybe some more viewing/shooting opportunities at standing or buried version :~). Just thinking out loud.
cheers,
gil

Looks like a good enough lens to me. Useful length for portraits on your 20D.

What beech is that? It looks cold so I cannot believe it's in South Africa.

That's pretty extreme!

What did you pay for the lens out of interest and where did you find it?

It was advertised as untested on one of our local outdoor photo forums for the amount of R120 (about 10 pounds at the current exchange rate)
in SA Rand it's a steal Very Happy
here it's mounted on the spottie for scale

Was the CD range the best of Soligor lenses? I must admit I've never really looked at them thinking they were not so good.

I think the C/D (Computer Designed) lenses came along about the time Allied Impex was starting to fall apart. They were supposed to be competitive with Vivitar Series One, but I think AIC had no input on specifications other than styling. Interesting story about their dying days here.

Sounds like it would have been an interestin company to work for. Although these are just the opinions of 1 person.

Thanks for the link

The C/D acronym means "Compact Design" because the first batch of c/d lenses were more compact with bigger aperture // more compact + more aperture = MUCH more compact// than the previous series of lenses

The 1st batch of c/d lenses were made by tokina and includes 28/2 + 35/2 + 55/2.8 macro + 135/2 + 200/2.8 + 80/200 3.5
the 2st batch (still made by tokina) were 35/105 3.5 + 100/300 5 + 70/220 3.5

Unfortunatly soligor (aic) did NOT understand that their top range had to remain top specs and/or top quality while in the same time Tokina started to sell their top lenses under their sole name (atx)

After 1978, The c/d lenses were mainly made by sun and quality was average

In the same time the vivitar s1 were until 1986 top quality lenses and/or top specs lenses (the last TOP s1 lenses were the 450/4.5 and the 70/210 2.8-4 Qdos after these they were made by cosina or samyang and quality was average)
