Hi people,
first of all, sorry for my english. I'm not native speaker. I'm brazillian.

I've been googling to find out what kind of Vivitar I own.
But it seems so hard since there's 3 same range lens (28-105mm)

I'm going to show u the information I have:
It says at the ring:
Vivitar series 1 28-105mm 1:2.8-3.8 VMC MACRO FOCUSING ZOOM No. 09741649 67mm

There's a fat rubber grip written "series 1" in it.

here is a picture that I found out at google that is the same that I own:
http://www.mflenses.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=2349

But how good is this one?

And I wanna know what means VMC. Is Vivitar Multi-Coat? Or something like that?
'cause I tell you I'm kinda worried about that 'cause my lens is yellowing , you know.
When you look a white wall through View Finder, It's not white... it's yellow .. or light-brown...

Is it coating effect?
If positive, how can I fix it?
May I expose the lens to an UV lamp about a month to get a cristal clear lens again?

These are 2 doubts I have about my lens.
Can someone please help me?
If it is good or bad lens ; and if Can I get the white glass back;

I've already read a looong post about this issues, and talking about the vivitar... but I'm that post didn't help me at all. Sorry to create a new topic about the same issue.

Thank you all,
Pedro (from Brazil).

Welcome to the group.
I don't have familiarity with this lens.
Surely someone will come along who does to help you.

Cheers
Andy

1- Reputation good
2- VMC= Vivitar Multi Coated (the name for the s1 coating SUPPOSED to be better than normal mc /i presume marketing trick because the better s1 lenses were manufactured by tokina AND kiron = 2 different manufacturers = 2 different coatings)

3- For the yellowing
a- Can be a dye cast due to age / some former high end glasses (< 1980) yellowish with age BUT this lens is not so old
b- Perhaps the lens has been damaged by bad usage (ie : heat)

the same lens came to me 3 weeks ago....I bought it just to give manual focusing zooms a try. Well, I am not a serious lens tester at all, to me it seems ok as long as you don't use it only on the extreme ends. It makes a nice close focus and a usable portrait lens. Don't compare it with your best primes....The zoom range is also very convenient. Focusing needs very short ways, that makes it harder to focus correctly, and you have to refocus after zooming.
This make (with the rubber grip) is described somewhere in the internet as the good version of the three, but I don't know how reliable this information is.

just enjoy it!
Gerd

By the serial #, it's a Cosina made version. Nothing special, average quality lens, not made by one of the better quality Series One manufacturers from the 80's. Evidently Cosina made several versions of this lens with the model with a 67mm filter size being said as being the better of the two...If you are satisfied with the results, keep it, otherwise sell it & look for a Kiron 28-105 which is a better lens...
