today at local houseclearing sale....old broken enlarger and box full of goodies
iside this box i find Schneider kreusnach componar 1.45 105mm and Rodenstock Ysaron 1.35 50mm
plus Paterson complete developing kit for 35 -120 film al for R 75 (us dollar 7.5

Rodenstock had some funges so opened up imediatly clean, drop blades out by accident Embarassed 40 min later they are in and lens assembled, but f8 stops down completely
open again, blades were reversed Embarassed 40 min later again
then makeshift tube and onto cam

SURPRISE i think this is now my sharpest lens on the tube
all was done handheld so i will do propper test later but i think it beats al my 50mm taks
1st shot just lens and back plate pressed against the camera

on the tube 3mm sized jumping spider

Am i right or is it just me? Very Happy

Yes indeed, these enlarger lenses are excellent for that job.

I have a 75mm Componar that I haven't mounted yet, I should give it a try.

But your winner there is the Rodenstock. You can usually get enlarger lenses cheap on ebay, but Rodenstocks have a magical name it seems.

Nice work!
I love jumping Spiders (not any others really though).
I have one who has lived in my sun-room for 3 years now (must be male huh?).
Really fun to watch them hunt.

You are completely right, enlarging lenses are great for macro, and the results speak for themselves

this reminds me that i have a number of old printerlenses (same construction as enlargerlenses) that are now waiting for years to take place on a macrotube and just today the M42-4/3-adapters arrived

The sad thing is that we do not have this lovely jumping spiders at this time of year

Hi Luis
I noticed on the componar that the lensmust be some way from the mount before it will focus (about 70mm) whilst the rodenstock can get close focus against the mount

Does this mean if i want to use the 105mm for makro that it will have to be on a tube double that lenght to get some magnification
and probably 2oomm long for 1:1 ?

Hi Rusty,

I have a 105mm/4.5 Wollensak enlarger lens that I've used for macro - well, close focus, see below. Unlike the longer macro lenses, these enlarger lenses are not telephoto designs (actual distance from focal plane < effective focal length), they are just plain long focal length lenses.

As its focal length says, you have to get it 4 inches (or 105mm) from the sensor for infinity focus, and for anything closer you want it even further away. This isn't too practical with extension tubes and focusing tubes, so a bellows is the way to go, probably with extension tubes besides.

So for really close focus with this 105mm you will need a fairly long contraption.

Rusty
Thanks for the samples. Love the jumping spider although my better half would not let one near the house.
Luis
Thanks for the information. I have a few enlarger lenses I am trying out as macro lenses. Best so far is a a Vario-Rodagon 44-52.
