Would Like Some Help with Choosing Lenses

I want to put a good 28mm lens on my Sigma SD-14, so that with the crop factor it will become aprroximately equal to a 50mm "normal" lens.

There are so MANY 28s out there, but I am looking for a 28 in either screw mount or Pentax K bayonet-type mount.

If anyone could steer me in a proper direction, I would love your opinions. I have had good luck with Takumar lenses, and wonder if I should stick to that.

I have no problem with a "slow" lens, as I mostly shoot landscapes.
------------------------------------------------------------

Also, I have wanted a 300 or 400 lens for my forays out to a local bird sanctuary. I have been using an old Vivitar 100-300/5, and it is pretty bad, with purple fringing and very soft even at f:8 or f:11. Confused

There is a chance that I can get a Meyer Orestegor 300/4 for less than $40. It is mint, I've already seen it and worked the functions off-camera. Perhaps one or two dust specks is all. Would this be a viable lens to use, or is there something sharper out there?

In this case, with shooting the birds, I have the emphasis on "sharp" more than other factors. Would be using a Wemberley mount on the tripod.

I could also get a Meyer Telemegor 400/5.5, not sure of the price, maybe $60 from the same guy.

THANKS as always!

Laurence

Hi Larry,

First, I enjoyed looking at your MFormat pics to a point I have gotten itchy for a Yashica 124/G Smile

The only 28 in M42 that I have experienced is the S-M-C Takumar 3.5/28. It's a sharp lens, but I cannot say anything about FF corner performance with any proof, but on crop, it sharp enough. The color is typical of other S-M-C Takumar lens.

Unfortunately mine does not get used as often since the Yashica ML 2.8/28 and Zuiko 3.5/28 are simply better. It is like new with case and hood. In fact, I am thinking of selling it to raise cash to get a 5D to replace my 20D with the dying shutter.

Good luck with the search.

Hi Larry
I have an interesting lens you may want to check out.
It's a Yashica DSM 2.8/24mm in m42.
I think it is an exact ringer for the ML2.8/24 but in screw mount.
The coating and body look the same and performance is not distinguishable between the two.
Keep an eye out for them as well as the DSM2.8/28 who is also the exact of the ML 2.8/28.
If you want to try mine I'm happy to send it over.
Lot's of guys here find the ML24 to be a very tip top lens. Comparable to the distagon 25(although I have never used that lens).

The Orestegor 300/4 for $40 is a great bargain, grab it if you can. The resale value is over $100, especially if its in M42.

The older Telemegor 300/4.5 is a great lens, but hard to find in M42.

My Telemegor 400/5.5 isn't very sharp, quite soft and flare-ey wide open, and just plain off even stopped down. That may just be mine, but even so.

I've had much better results from a cheap $20 Spiratone 400/6.3.

The best long lenses I've got are the magnificent Komura 400/6.3 and Schneider Tele-Xenar 360/5.5

There are lots of great cheap 300mm's, at least in my opinion, though I may not be the most discriminating fellow.

One to start with, instantly available and very cheap (don't pay more than $20), is the Vivitar/Soligor/Sears/Mamiya/etc. 300/5.5, made by Tokina and sold by almost everyone in the late 1960's-early 1970's. Its a heavy chunky thing with a large tripod mount, you can't miss it.

I need to re-do these sample pictures. they don't do it justice.

Another good one thats easy enough to find is the Tamron Adaptamatic 300/5.6 - you will have to find one in M42, or grab another Adaptamatic like the 135 for the mount.

http://forum.mflenses.com/tamron-adaptamatic-300-5-6-my-last-adaptamatic-t14537,highlight,tamron+300.html

Yet another cheap one is the old preset Tokina 300/5.5, also made under many names -

http://forum.mflenses.com/caspeco-old-tokina-300-5-5-preset-t2-mount-t12261,highlight,sears+300.html

The biggest problems with this are longer minimum focus.

Larry
I can not advise you with long tele (ask Luis about long Tamrons, Tokinas, Soligors, Lentars) but regarding wide one I know some good lenses. I don't know about range of crop compare to 35mm but some tips regarding quality: above average and very good. Also very good means pretty expensive in some cases. I do not know Nikons, Pentax, Olympus, Canon
Tamron SP AD2 3.5/17 rating very good/one of the best in its class, price about $170-$230 depends on condition. AD2
Flektogon 4/20 rating one of the best in its class, price about $180-250 depends on condition.M42
Flektogon 2.8/20 rating one of the top in its class, price range $280-350 M42

Below $100:
Enna Panorama 4/24 very sharp lens, underrated M42
Vivitar 3.8/19 - this one has mixed ratting PK
Chinar 2.8/28 average PK
Vivitar 2.5/28 I have very good copy. M42.
I hope it will help you a little
In addition:
Few days ago I've tested the same lens like this Click here to see on Ebay. I was very disappointed. Lens was in outstanding condition something like 10- in scale 1 to 10. But totally soft wide open.

Andy,

I cannot find any reference on that lens. If it's anywhere near the ML, this will be one to look for. Perhaps, you (or Larry) can give us a review of it.

HI, VOYTEK

Surprise thing for my! Since the lens was one of the selected ones by Alpa for its system. And it is known that Alpa selected only very good lenses.

Very useful data for my. Thanks

Greetings. RINO.
