I just received my new Micro Nikkor 55mm f3.5 AI lens and am VERY pleased with it. I've read somewhere that this lens is optimized for a 1:10 reproduction ratio. This must mean on 35mm film. I'm wondering what focus distance this equates to on my Nikon D40x. Thanks for your help.

Roughly 11 times the focal length as measured from the sensor plane. The crop factor doesn't matter because the reproduction ratio defines the ratio between the image and the original, and as the image is cropped so is the original.

On my S-M-C Macro Takumar 50/4, 1:10 ratio is about to 0.65m, so for a 55mm it can be rather a distance like 0.6m Wink

welcome Lighthearted
the scale is marked in orange on your lens, 1:10 is at about 0.7m on the yellow scale
as your sensor is 23.6x15.8mm, you can frame 23.6cm on a rule and get exactly the 1:10 ratio

Differences??

1-"Roughly 11 times the focal length as measured from the sensor plane. The crop factor doesn't matter because the reproduction ratio defines the ratio between the image and the original, and as the image is cropped so is the original".

Thanks for the quick responses. I'm glad to see that this forum is so active. I took a close look at the lens and the reproduction ratio is indeed printed on it. It shows 1:10 being about 0.7 meters. Thank you very much for pointing that out. I am using this lens to take pictures for some of my ebay items and this reproduction ratio is about perfect. I shoot at f5.6 and am very happy with the pictures that it and my little Nikon D40x produce. I still can't believe I scored this fine lens for about $50.

Thanks again,
Ken

Well known as one of the best values on the market right now. If you don't have the extension tube for 1:1, try to get it

It's well worth spending a few extra dollars for the M2 tube. Very Happy
