Pentax 500mm Spotting Scope (mirror lens), usual birds

I didn't properly test this mirror spotting scope I had rigged as a 500mm f/8 T-mount lens. My initial tests showed it was rather poor. I took it out yesterday, which was finally sunny, on my usual lunchtime route.

It may be the lens or it may be me. Perhaps 500mm is too much for me hand-held, though I have no problems with 400mm. Or this may be a lousy lens. I should try a real 500/8 mirror lens. These things really are useful for bird shots in the field.
