When trying to fix a flashgun unit, I got a nice electrical shock because the capacitor was fully charged. Since those current/voltages can be harmful for the human being, I'm building a small capacitor discharger.
Here you have the circuit:



R1 has to be of 10 to 20 watt dissipation.

I recall the old workshop trick of tossing charged capacitors to the new boys. Smile
Why not just a 1Megohm resistor?

Indeed. I've always used whatever > 200kOhm resistor was at hand.

Just to have some feedback on the discharge status. The 4 diodes in series get 2,8 Volt across that feed the leds.
Two lines to don't mind on polarity.
The LEDs will light during the discharge, once the capacitor is empty, they get dark again.
