What is the deal with this lens it doesn't seem to get the same love around here as the much more expensive Zeiss 85 1.4 Planar T. I saw images of this lens on another forum and the pictures were simply stunning. The only real difference I saw was the smaller aperture. There seems to be a $300.00 price difference between this and the Planar so I would guess this lens would be a little more popular. _________________ 5D, Canon XTI, Elan, Pentacon 135 (Preset), Vivitar TX 135/2.5, Jupiter 2/85, Helios 44-2 2/58

It is true what you say. The Planar 85 gets all the big press.
That is true of all fast lenses I suppose. There are many here who love the Sonnar 85.
Personally I find it one of my favorites.
The copy I have is as sharp open as the Planar is at 2.8.
For my shooting I prefer the bokeh from a sonnar scheme over the planar usually.
They really are different lenses and it's tough to compare the two by cost and speed alone.
Sonnar for general use and landscapes. When corners are important and acuuracy desired.
Planar best for portraits and background seperation and of course low light.
It has a more aggressive look that lends a personality to the shot.
Once stopped down the differences are few.
If you have a chance at either take it.

it cost more money to make a 1.4 than a 2.8
the 2.8 doesn't give enough separation for full body shot
test shot
85:1.4 @1.4 on full frame
85:1.4 @2.8

Sure about the separation, but it depends on what you are shooting. The 2.8/85mm is pretty good in terms of sharpness/contrast (acutance). _________________ Klaus - Admin

I wonder if the second one is shot with a Sonnar/2.8 instead, would it be different? My guess is it would, but the is purely a gut feeling
Both lens are in my list, but when will I ever find the $$$ to get them. |
