Hi guys,
I'd like to say hi, having just found and joined your interesting forum and wondered if you could help with a query.
First and foremost I am a neg film shooter so, everything for me is manual focus. I shoot with Bronicas (6 x 4.5 - 6 x 7 ) and my trusty Canon A1's with some great FD glass for anything 35mm.
For the past five years I've been using KM 7i's and A2's as 'polaroid substitutes' for my Bronicas, which has since saved me a small fortune so, I'm no stranger to digital.
I also own and use a D200 for odd jobs and have several pro quality AF lenses and several older AI mf lenses. My favourite is the mf Nikon 75-150mm f3.5.
The other day while rumaging through my loft, I came upon my almost forgotten collection of M42 lenses, surprisingly still in very good condition I might add, which seems such a shame to leave them there unused and neglected.
Now my question is: has any member of the forum sucessfully mounted M42 lenses onto a D200 by means of an adapter ( I'm sure there must be one available on eBay or the likes ) and if so, what kind of results did they return? I suspect that there will be focusing issues alongside some CA's etc on certain lenses, which may make it an impractical combination, but it would be interesting to find out.
I'd be very interested to hear the experiences of anyone who has experimented with this combination.
Regards...
Tony

Without glass any adapter will not allow focusing to infinity - the lenses will work fine otherwise. There are conflicting views on the adapters with glass - my only foray was a severe disappointment because the quality drop was so great, but others have found satisfactory results. It seems to be a try and see game

PS Welcome to this lovely forum

Thanks for the welcome and reply Patrick.
I did a quick check on eBay (UK) and came across an M42 to Nikon adapter mount with a glass element and the sales pitch implied that it would would work. The brand name was 'KOOD'... When you say 'disappointment', was this because you did or didn't use a glass adapter or was it that you tried both and they were still unsatisfactory?

I've used a glassless adapter on a D200 and found that 135mm and longer, whilst not giving me infinity focus gave a reasonably useful focal range. Shorter focal lengths were too limiting for anything but extreme close-ups/macro shots.

I've used a Bower M42 infinity (with glass) adapter as well as a general no-brand mechanical (without glass) adapter to fit my M42 lenses on Nikon D3. I'm new to M42 on Nikon, but here's what I think based on a few weeks of less serious testing.

With our without adapter, the ones I've used vignette very little on D3. Useable wide open, perfectly usable one f-stop down. I am falling in love with the wonderful characteristics and color rendition of the CZJ Biotar 58/2 and CZJ Sonnar 135/3.5. The 135mm Sonnar when used with mechanical adapter is wonderful on D3. The infinity adapter lowers quality less than I imagined, but there exists large variation between adapters and their optical quality - try them and find the best.

Some of these lenses show bokeh that is outstanding, especially when you look at modern aspherical glasses and how they paint out of focus areas. Some are disappointments, my only lens disappointment seems to fall under the category of sample variation.

If you look for better detail than modern pro lenses - look away. If you're looking for price/quality ratio and wonderful color and bokeh - start building an M42 lens range for your Nikon.

Here's a stack of test photos in original size. RAW conversions with moderate sharpening and WB changes, no levels or pp sharpening applied. Photos are tagged with lens and adapters used.

Thank you all very much for your welcome and advice - I reckon I will enjoy coming here ( unlike some forums I've been going on LOL).

I will look forward to hearing more of your experiences with regard to M42 lenses on Nikon cameras. So by all means keep the info coming.
Regards...
Tony

Made with D50+ M42 lenses

No infinity, focal length a bit shorter than on M42 cameras.

Apart from the IQ, the thing that stands out is the bokeh in many of the shots - absolutely super.
Thanks for sharing.

There was a guy that posted in the manual lens section that used a KOOD
adapter with glass element, very nice results!

BTW, welcome to the forum, Tony!

Landscapes - It's something I've only just tried my hand at after all these years of people shooting Attila - to be honest, until maybe last year or 18 months, I'd NEVER really tried shooting landscapes. I don't think somehow I'll ever make it as a landscape shooter, but I try LOL.

Thanks for the link Katastrofo - and an even bigger thanks for your comments on my gallery but I'm sure it's unwarranted.
Up to two years ago, I lived in my own little world of shooting people with neg film cameras, especially boudoir style images. Around that time I joined a Konica Minolta user group on DP Rev. I started using a KM D7i intitially as a 'polaroid' substitute about 5 years ago and then used a KM A2 after my D7i was accidentally killed. I have the A2 set up purely for this job and it works great and saves alot of money but I only shoot TIFF format so that I get WYSIWYG to match my neg film work.
The KM group started a PAW ( picture a week) and initially I was only posting people shots but I decided to widen my horizons and post shots out of my comfort zone.
Since then I have tried out new genres including landscapes and I suppose they aren't too bad - I still prefer my people shots LOL. The problem with the UK is the weather - skies are very often overcast and grey so it's not so good for landscapes, plus where I'm located, there aren't many dramatic areas to photograph.
I'm getting better I must admit and I try best but, I still don't think I'll ever make a landscape photographer LOL.
I must admit it's good to get encouragement and I'm very pleased I found and joined the forum.
Thankyou all so far!
Regards...
Tony
