The best Exakta, IMO, is the VXIIa; the VX and VXIIb are close. But none of these have light meters, and the idea of an auto mode in an Exakta is straining my imagination. Exakta reached their peak around 1958, and were on their way down as things like instant return mirrors, light meters and automatic operation were introduced.

Thank you Rick.

Now I have RTL1000 and want to find another body. What do you think about RTL1000?

Hi KhanX:

I thought the RTL1000 was pretty cool when it was new (yes, I'm that old), but I've never owned one and I've never repaired one. It was the first of the metal-shuttered Exaktas that shared their mechanicals with the Praktica line. Their reputation for reliability is not as good as the earlier models, but I can't say from any personal experience whether that reputation is justified.

The other line of cameras that accepts Exakta mount lenses is the Topcon RE Super and RE-2. These are excellent, reliable cameras with a good TTL metering system but no auto exposure modes. They had their own auto lens diaphragm linkage system, and relocated the shutter release so that they do not couple with the auto diaphragm in Exakta lenses.
