Step less? Man, I should've just cut my losses and ran from this thread when I liked the sharpness and contrast comparison. Maybe I'll just take a trip to Russia and knock on the door of every dead photographer until I find a sanely priced 40-2.

Else, preset lenses are interesting for stepless aperture :
In the 85mm range, you have the Jupiter-9 2/85.
Else, you have, for instance, in other ranges : Mir-1V 2.8/37, industar 2.8/50, Jupiter-37A 3.5/135, Taïr-11A 2.8/135, and others.
