This is a super compact lens that I have been on the fence about. Sure, it's small and light, but despite having owned a half-dozen of them over the years, I have never really been a fan. I have used them on film cameras and the D5xxx series bodies, and on those DX bodies, there's just something about the rendering that just isn't as pleasing as other lenses. Not sure how to describe it really. But I intend to take one to Hawaii next week, so maybe I'll change my mind.
The first five are on film with a Nikon N2000 and XP2. The last is on a Nikon D5300.

They seem to behave better on film when they are in reasonably good shape, at least in my experience.
They have a bit of a cult following with the "Street" crowd, which actually means little to me, personally.
I've had a lot of both versions pass through my hands with never keeping one for long at a time.
They are susceptible to rapid changes in temperature. Even worse, at cold temperatures below freezing, the plastic internals start to grind.
For a compact lens, I usually prefer a 50 f2 "H", or "H-C" over the modern single coating.
Technically the more modern lens is the better. The problems described above aren't really worth the time to me, but that's the old Personal Preference thing rearing it's head again.
Good luck with yours, and be sure to post the photo's you take with it!

Thank you. I like that one too. It was a customer's bike and very unique build for the brand. Lots of fun to ride. |
