Picked this one up today from a local photography shop because it was cheap and looked very handsome with the chrome Very Happy

Not very familiar with this brand. I'll post some test shots in a bit.

A beautiful lens! I have the same model and it performs pretty well, I'm sure you will like it Smile

sharp enough, contrast and color look modest... ok for a cheap lens I guess.

Might perhaps be better in bright sunny day instead of dark grey dull day ?

These early silver Yashinons are ok, but they are far cry from Takumars.

At infinity focus, the rear element of this lens projects far behind the mount.
I have tried one on a Pentax Spotmatic and it interferes with the mirror.
Is this a common problem for this particular lens?

Surely, coating is matter in dull light.

Yes, this is a known issue that this lens has mirror clearance issues

I recently repaired and sold one of these.
The interesting point, other than the fact that they are very easy to disassemble, is that the plate with the M42 mount is quite easy to displace from its proper position, and in the case of my lens it was focusing substantially beyond infinity and hitting the mirror on a Spotmatic and my Pentax DSLR as well.
The fix was to loosen the three setscrews on the bottom plate and aligning it correctly while it was screwed on the Spotmatic. I used a set of shims to keep the lens parallel while retightening the setscrews. This part of the design is a weakness. Such a fundamental dimension should not be so prone to displacement. This may be the reason there are reports of it hitting mirrors.

That seems. My DX 50/1.4 also hits the mirror of my Spotmatic (both are in perfect condition).
Funny shots!

In some cases with lenses like this, whose rear element housing extends especially far into the camera, the interference is not with the mirror but with the tab that pushes the aperture pin in. By trial and error, one can determine the maximum distance setting that avoids any type of interference. Up to that distance, the lens works OK with the body.

Some test shots from my copy on my Sony a7 at the weekend (click for larger images, note contrast has been increased a bit):

#1 - f/1.4

#2 - f/2

#3 - f/2.8

#4 - f/1.4

#5 - f/2.8

#6 - f/2.8

#7 - f/2.8

#8 - f/8

Summary

An interesting lens which flares at larger apertures! A lot! But it definitely renders well. Oh, and it's VERY pretty Laughing [/b]

Just got it on bay. Is it too expensive at 40? No point asking now, but just curious!

Proof of the pudding is in the eating.
Try it and see how it compares with other 50mm f1.4 lenses.
If it is as good, you can ask what would you have to pay for the other lens.
That will give an idea if it was a good buy or not.

An excellent performer even from wide open.
Here is a recent shot at full aperture.

I think that it is safe to say that any Yashinon, especially a DX Yashinon, is going to be a tack-sharp performer. I have a 50mm f/1.7 DX Yashinon in M42 mount, and I've found it to be exceptionally sharp. It blew away a recent Helios 44-2 I also own. Haven't tried it against a Pentax yet, but I'll wager it will hang tough, even against a good Tak.
