I finally got a Hexanon 40mm pancake for my Konica collection of lenses and bodies. Here is one of the first shots through the lens.

These are windmill blades that I caught on a huge truck taking a rest in Texas, on the way to Michigan (far north) to be installed in a wind farm.

These are the smallest blades made, 140’ (about 35meters) long. The driver of the truck said they come in three sizes, 140, 150 and 170’ long.

I thought the sign on the lead car was hilarious.

Shot with a Konica TC-X body, 40mm Pancake lens, Astia 100F film, F11 at 1/60th.

It seems that this size says it better than a smaller size.

Cheers

Jules

What is amazing, is that it takes VERY little wind to turn blades of this size.

The sign on the lead vehicle is ridiculously funny! Laughing

Thanks Poilu,
I've been dying to catch those blades and this time it was perfect. I had a new 40mm lens, and a camera full of film. Ha Ha

Hi Michael,

From my sailing days I remembered the formula that an approx. 8 knot (10 MPH) wind produces approx. .015 hp. per square foot. These blades have roughly 980 sq. ft. per blade, three blades per fan = 2940 Sq. Ft. per fan = approx. 44hp produced in an 10 mph wind.

The interesting thing is as the wind speed doubles the force quadruples so that in a 20 mph wind, the horsepower is approx .04-.06 hp which is approx 150-160 HP with the sail area of these blades.

Of course these are real rough figures, the actual figures are somewhat different because of the aerodynamic shapes of the blades, the angle of the wind etc, etc nonetheless, you are right. There is a s**tload of power available at very low windspeeds.

Cheers

Jules

Saw a small bit of a news show on cable, that spotlighted a small (Midwest?) town that made ALL of it's power from a wind farm. They even generate more power than what they can use, so they sell it to the power company.

Not all areas are good candidates for wind farms and they do take up A LOT of space, but they are a good source of power.

Oh Yeah, even big for Texas, and these are the smallest blades they make.

Shocked

WOW Shocked

Boy I sure hope this becomes a more common site in the US.
We should set up a full force army of these things in the nations capitol.
With all the "blow hards" running around we could power the east coast Laughing
