Who can remove damaged coating?

I found a great Schacht Travegon except that it suffers from bad coating on the front element (a very common problem with Schacht lenses). I want to know if anybody has had experience removing this or knows of a shop (in the U.S.) that can remove it. The rest of the lens is in excellent condition but the spotty coating ruins the contrast.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

Even if you will remove coating "no coating" will also not improve contrast left as is and fix contrast in post process.

I have removed lens coating on several lenses.
Front lens front coating gets a bit better light transmittance into the lens. But without this coating the more back reflected light is away in the enviroment - no problem as long you don´t use filters.
Lens surfaces inside the lens and camera should be coated, because reflections will reflect back, scatter and make contrast worse.

Probably the lens has haze inside?

No haze. Just coating damage and some cleaning marks on the front lens. The rest of the glass is excellent. The effect of the damaged coating is a lot like having a bunch of fingerprints on the glass, except you cannot clean it off. This seems to be a common problem with older Schacht lenses, I've not seen it on any other lenses except Ricoh lenses from the same era.

I took the lens apart to check for other problems, but the glass inside is perfectly clean. There isn't even any internal dust. It's spotless. I discovered though that the auto-aperture mechanism uses a graphite lubricant, and I think this may be the source of the coating damage on the front element. The back side of the front element is also in perfect shape. The only problem is the coating on the front. I hope there is a gentle way to remove this.

I think that removing the front coating doens not help the lens-contrast. Probably the lens has not that contrast like newer lenses.

I'm pretty sure I'm not imagining things. Wink

The travegon is known for being pretty punchy, and this one flares pretty bad/lacks contrast.
