Nice - I have seen it said they resolve well out of the vintage OEM mirror lenses. Up there with Nikon's.

VIVITAR SERIES 1 70-210mm 1:2.8-4.0 APOCHROMATIC OPTICS ZOOM LENS NIKON N/AI-S
Excellent lightly used condition Nikon AI-S fit Vivitar Series 1 zoom lens in full working order. Made in Japan by Cosina the lens glass is clean and clear without scratches, hazing or fungus. The aperture control sets and stop down correctly and the focus and zoom controls are smooth over the full range. Cosmetic condition is very good too with only the smallest signs of any use. Complete with correct lens hood, front and rear caps.

Well shit, I thought, "this must be exaggeration", but little did I know there was an apochromatically labelled version (the last one that wasn't a Sigma copy?), and it really does say "apochromatic optics" on the front. And it's in one of the best mount choices for adapting. I am lucky - this will probably become the one I use - I was waiting to buy a C/Y adapter for my earlier 70-210mm f2.8-4 (Komine I think).

This is a really lucky bid, although I've seen 70-210mm f2.8-4 versions in good condition go for £12-25 (which is less than I thought).

Damn....you've stolen that! Mr. Green

I wonder if the optics were the same as the old MF versions? Or is the apocromatic quality down to coatings rather than optics? Probably not. that's a Cosina and I think the most common of the MF version appears to be Komine. It's a lens I love, I've had a few and still got two. The constant ap' f3 version was always the one that was raved about, but I rate the 2.8 - 4 as a far better lens.

But Ponder & Best did design and specify their lens designs to manufacturers, maybe the optical design was shared by various manufacturers? Question

I'll make sure to let you know and compare it to my copy of a S1 70-210mm f3.5 - on speedbooster ultra.

I was aware of that image, but didn't look to the end version and noted 'apochromat'.

It is interesting the element count remains unchanged. I wonder if it's the same case as how the Canon EF 50-200mm f3.5-4.5 for the L version had one element of it's focus group become low dispersion.

L version

Non L version

Hmm there are some subtle element shape/thickness differences between the two. I'm not sure you could put it down to drawing differences, even though the lines are thick, they are equally thick in both drawings.

A well used copy of a Helios 65 lens with Kiev 10/15 mount arrived on my doorstep this morning.

It's a lens with a reputation for fairly wild swirling, which appears to be the case. My copy is from 1966 if I have interpreted the serial number correctly. Wide open the lens has respectable resolution, but also features noticeable veiling flare, pointing to coating ineffiency, as it disappears when stopped down. This is slightly odd, as the aperture blades are fairly bright metal, I expected it might get worse or at least stay the same stopped down.

A 100% crop wide open from the picture above. It's reasonably sharp in the center, and the background effects could make for some interesting images.

Oh dear. I appear to have received a lemon.

Mechanically it's in nice condition, but there is some light moisture/'hazing' close to the front element of the variator group visible under torch.

But I don't think this is the problem to me. Even with the issues below the colour reproduction I can see is still good. Everything else looks great.

I'm comparing this to my Vivitar S1 70-210mm f3.5 first version, which has seen some use but is in okay nick. On A6000 with Metabones 'Speedbooster Ultra'. SOOC JPEG, I have the Vivid setting turned on. Also note in the first images there is a wall to the immediate right, messing with right side of the frame, and I am not perfectly aligned to the fencing by any means. Still enough to show the issues, though.

At 210mm. First the V1 f3.5:

Now the 70-210mm f2.8-4.0 'V6':

Surprised

Here's the 70-210mm f2.8-4.0 'V6' on it's own, at f2.8 and then f11.

Here is a bokeh shot from the centre of the frame. I focused the lens to roughly infinity, so this is before focus. To me, this looks like misalignment. At 210mm, and wide open for both.

V1 f3.5:

70-210mm f2.8-4.0 'V6':

Seemingly the bokeh balls have a right side bias.

S-M-C takumar 20mm which came as part of a Spotmatic outfit.
I got it on ePay for a song, and it also came with a mint (in the leather case) 50/1.4 wit barely any dust on it.

Eggplant, I think it doesn't take too much experience to see that there's something wrong with the lens.
That could have been a probably unique opportunity to compare it to all the others. I'd still try to find out what's wrong and maybe have it fixed. I don't know if you feel like opening up the lens yourself, or you'd deem it worth having a pro taking a look. It's certainly a rather rare lens and I'd try to have it fixed.

Yes, I'm wondering if I will get some money off and decide to keep it. I think it's decentered somewhere. I also agree it's worth keeping.

I'm not sure if I feel like opening it myself, mainly - dust contamination from just having a look, then maintaining centering of removed optical elements, then having rubber suction tools sufficiently clean to remove internal elements without leaving a mark. Also disassembly wrenches that don't scratch in the notches. If I make a sort of hard-drive repair 'clean box', I would feel more comfortable messing about a bit. But I haven't done enough repairs to feel confident.

I think what you say is right due to rarity. I think at the very least I will set it aside and ask about. Although it may not give a fixable answer, because decentering is serious. I am hoping to *eventually* try to learn to make an autocollimator rig so I can put these under test, but for now I will get a few more bokeh torch test samples to diagnose the fault.

Maybe given the identical(?) element structure to the first 70-210mm f2.8-4 version, I could get some photos/videos of the internal structure and try to 'see' anything obviously wrong. But I am doubtful that will clinch it. Nothing rattles around inside either.

Another arrival. Most online reference to the Tower 34 camera is regarding the circa 1950 Ansco made box camera, however the number was reused for the Tower 34 Reflex camera, a Braun Paxette Reflex camera rebadged. Unfortunately the shutter is faulty on this copy, which is a pity, the meter works. Of more interest is the lens anyhow, which is in nice condition, and takes images with pretty good contrast, although this copy showed average resolution only in the corner at F8.

One of the other lenses in the combined package, a fast 135mm ernostar design. This one is not 100% original, someone has previously adapted it to Olympus OM mount. It was advertised by the seller as only fitting the M43 adapter that came with it, this was because the screws holding the mount on were not countersunk enough - that particular adapter must be too thin, and would be quite loose on a normal OM mount lens. A drill and drill bit corrected this part. Following that the lens helicoid required disassembly as someone had previously reassembled it without really knowing how. A few hours work, the glass and aperture are perfect fortunately.

The lens performance wide open is decent, better than I had expected. However it didn't tidy up as much as expected by F8, so there's that.

A year ago , when I sold the remains of an old manual , I swore not to take any more junk ) But as it turned out, I don't have anything between 21 and 45mm. I bought a minolta md 28/3.5. There is no adapter (coming from China) I took test shots just attached the lens to the pentax adapter.

Yes, everything is just good Klaus. Just been busy with family life, kids interests and sports, boats, cabin life and Lithium battery building for a while. I've scaled down my lens collection slightly, but it's still more than enough to play with.

How about yourself?

Canon nFD 50mm f/1.2. Somehow, I like it better than Canon EF 50/1.2L at 1.2.

Auto-Takumar 35mm 1:3.5 I had to clean the glass from haze and fungus. Luckily it is a simple design.

Glad to hear that! My son got a son recently, so I am a grandpa now Wink Other than that pretty busy in bird protection business and also doing some UV-camera systems for biologists. Will also be reducing my way too huge lens collection soon....

Yashica ML 55mm 2.8 macro, thanks to caspert79 review it came for a good price , and nice shape overall (my son's taken away the Nikkor 55macro so it was a good excuse to go for yashica)
