It's funny what catches the eye. The infinity symbol look great in that font.

Mamyia Sekor C 8/500mm Reflex:

On the Mamiya 645 series, the lens has the field of view comparable to a 300mm full frame lens, thus it's "wider" than most mirror lenses. Using on 24 MP and 43 MP FF, the Mamiya has better detail resolution (especially in the corners) than the Nikkor 8/500mm mirror lens (second computation from about 1984) - the following image is a 100% crop from near the center:

However, as most other 500mm mirror lenses, the Mamiya suffers from a central part in the image which has lesser contrast and a stronger illumination (it looks a bit like vignetting, but it's caused by internal reflection).

The second computation of the Nikkor is better in this respect, since its main mirror has a opening drilled into the main mirror (details see Nikkor tale 13, https://imaging.nikon.com/history/story/0013/index.htm).

The bokeh of the Mamiya is slightly less donut-like since its secondary mirror is relatively small:

On 24 MP and on 43 MP FF there were no visible lateral CAs and only very minor longitudinal CAs; the lens' color correction seems to be excellent (better than the average 8/500mm mirror lens, and way better than the average 400mm / 500mm vintage prime). This is a 100% crop from the corner of a 24 MP FF image:

Certainly a good and interesting mirror lens!

Latest is an Olympus Zuiko 32mm f1.7 from Pen EED half frame. It is a standard double gauss that almost covers FF (you lose like 10% of the frame focused at infinity), and is wickedly sharp, with excellent microcontrast and interesting bokeh. Needs to be mounted in a 10mm helicoid in order to achieve infinity focus. I could not rescue the two-bladed aperture but anyway I use it wide open so no real loss for me.

Thank you!

Well, I have a bit of a problem. The lens I got was with an Adaptall2 -> Konica adapter. I found an Adaptall2 -> FD adapter (as I have FD to Fuji adapters), but when I mount it on, the aperture doesn't change. The aperture works well with the Konica though.

I believe I mounted the FD adapter properly, incl. aligning the "aperture levers" but nope. Tried 20x, fiddled with it, but no chance. The aperture seems to close a tiny little bit (like from f/3.8 to f/4) but that's about it. Spent quite some time googling the issue, found documentation and videos and I don't get what I'm doing wrong.

The only possible explanation (far from confirmed): on the lens, there is a small ball that needs to be pushed for aperture to vary, and I haven't figured out how exactly this ball gets pushed with the FD adapter. There is a lever on it, I'm not sure it is aligned with the ball but anyway, when the adapter is on, that lever is blocked anyway. And yes, the adapter is an "Adaptall 2" one, so it should work.

I have an Adaptall 2 to Fuji-X and a Konica to Fuji-X adapters on the way, so I am confident I'll be able to use the lens eventually. However, I'd be really happy to understand what I do wrong. Out of sheer curiosity first, but I admit that the current lead times with China shippings due to Covid make the wait horrendous Smile

Ylyad. Did you make sure the latch / lever on the adaptall ring has clicked in position in the notch on the lens ? Some rings have one, others 2 levers. They have to be in these notches and for some lenses will get there only only by turning the aperture ring until they fall in place.

If the levers are in place, have you tried with the lens actually mounted on the body ? I believe (I'm not a FD specialist) it can make a difference.

Well, I tried another time. I have no idea what i did differently - I have the feeling I did the same as all the times before - but this time it worked.

Thanks!

Nice and unique images. I recently briefly tried my Mamiya Sekor 58mm f/1.7 and it displays this kind of bokeh occasionally.
