This fell into my path the other day - a 200mm TELE Vivitar f/3.5 in M42:

The outside is scarred up from use, but the glass is excellent, as are the mechanical functions.

I need to shoot with it more, but my initial impressions are very positive. I have a Pentacon 200, a Meyer Orestegor 200 zebra, a 200 Takumar 3.5, and a 200 Auto Tele Lentar 3.5 to compare it to. I used the Takumar a couple weeks ago, so I remember it better than the others.

It seems to be quite sharp wide open - slightly better than my Takumar, I would say. Bokeh is close to the Takumar, maybe not quite as good, but of course the Takumar has even more aperture blades!

It's about the same size and slightly heavier than the Orestegor, though the Vivitar has a 67mm front thread compared to the Pentacon/Orestegor's 55mm thread.

The lens looks somewhat awkward and unbalanced because the body near the mount is very narrow, while the front is large. It resembles a plunger. Once it's mounted on a camera though, the body balances out the entire form. I think it looks quite cool, actually.

ICA 1:4.5/F=12cm Dominar.

1916 for the shutter, according to the compur serial number at least, so a fairly early Compur.

Originally a Huttig Tessar lens built under license from Carl Zeiss. It continued under the formation of ICA in 1909, and indeed continued as the Dominar under Zeiss-Ikon when ICA came under its umbrella in 1926. Further life was eeked out of it through a name change to Zeiss Opton (unrelated to the post war Oberkochen facility).

Until a suitable adapter arrives, use is being limited to playing around at making shapes with the shutter blades, which is fun, but I'd prefer to be snapping.

Operating it plays with your head a little. It has the feel of something say 5-10 years old and well bedded in, not something over 100 years old. I think it's the complete lack of fragility or slop. The robust purposefulness of the dials and levers in operation is quite noticeable, although I have to admit, there appears at the moment to be one speed, regardless of setting. Something to look at when I'm feeling brave.

That's a lens i missed in a local auction a few years ago. It was the first and only Minolta 5/200mm i had seen here in Switzerland. It would be interesting to see how it compares e. g. tho the MC 4.5/200mm!

It's the first I've seen as well. I plan to walk around and take some photos with it. Unfortunately I don't have any other 200mm lens to compare it to. But I do have a MD zoom 70-210mm f/4 to put it up against. A quick test shows promising results.

Interestingly the preset ring does not work, that or I'm doing something wrong!

Indeed. I'm impressed with it. Christian Bruns design was cutting edge stuff in its day.

On my Rokkor TC 4/135mm the black ring is for (pre-)setting the desired aperture. It has click-stops. After setting the desired aperture with the black ring, i can move the second, white ring freely between "wide open" (f4) and the pre-selected aperture. Should be the same on the Rokkor 5/200mm ...

The aperture ring can move freely through the entire range whatever the preset ring is set to. I guess it's broken somehow, but not the biggest issue.

Today, at a small camera shop:

* Konica AR 1.7/50mm (first, large lens barrel)
* Konica AR 3.5/55mm Macro
* Vivitar 2/24mm (Kiron) with Konica mount

* Minolta MD-III 3.5/24-35mm

* Pentax (Asahi) SMC Takumar 3.5/28mm (M42)
* Pentax (Asahi) SMC Takumar 2.8/105mm (M42)
* Pentax (Asahi) SMC Takumar 4/200mm (M42)

The AR 1.7/50mm in its first version is new to me, the Konica Macro, the Vivitar and the Minolta are in a nicer shape than the existing samples in my collection, and the the Takumars add nicely to my existing small collection of ten M42 Takumars.

Images will follow ...

"Minolta MD-III 3.5/24-50mm". I assume f4.0. Good lens, was very expensive 30+ years ago...

Sorry, i meant Minolta MD-III 3.5/24-35mm. I have corrected it in my posting above.

The MD-III 4/24-50mm seems to be quite rare indeed. I don't own it, but thanks to a collector friend i was able to compare it to (my) MD-II 4/24-50mm. There was no difference detectable.

Konica Hexanon 21mm 2.8 w hood, Hexanon 135mm 3.2, Tokina AT-X 300mm 2.8 Pro Minolta AF/Sony A, Isco 135mm 3.5 Tele-Westanar & Westagon 50mm 1.9 . Might trade any of those for some nice macros.

It seems longer than a 28mm, if f2.8. Smile

135mm 2.8 Looks like this one, but closer focussing. http://m42lens.com/m42-lens-database/457-photax_paragon_135mm_f_2_8_22_v1

yeah upon further consideration, almost certainly a 135mm.. was definitely hoping for the 35mm f1.9 tho :/

we'll see, should have it (and another mystery lens, probably also 135mm) in a few days

Yes, looks more like the 135 with polished edge atop focus ring. Always fun to buy lots and see what turns up, my last one.

Was mainly after the 55mm Macro-Hex but 21mm 2.8 with rare hood is probably the best find i ever made. 135mm 3.2 Hex and 400mm Viv/Komine never tested, interesting to see how they behave. 50mm 1.7 Hex is a solid performer, had a couple of those.

Another Camera Fair last Sunday, and I sold some good stuff and made a decent profit on the day - for a change. Rolling Eyes But I still managed to buy.....

7 Artisans 50 / 18 - unmarked £20

Rokkor PF 55 / 1.8 - excellent condition. £5 ( Ignore the XD7, that's just a prop for the pictures. )

Tamron 04A 75-250 / 3.8 - perfect. £5

Tamron 01A 35-80 / 2.8 - Needs a grip, otherwise very good. £10

Tamron SP 19AH 70-210 / 3.5 - perfect £5

Soligor CD 45-150 / 3.5 - excellent condition, just like the one I bought at the last fair and I'd forgot about. £5

Vivitar 28 / 2.5 - filthy, but cleaned up perfectly. £10

Tamron 910P 95-205 / 6.3 - virtually unmarked, remarkable for a 1960's lens. £5

And I got this MENGS Arca angle bracket for my A7II for £10, still in the sealed plastic bag. And a very nice hood for the Vivitar for 50 Pence!

A damn good day, there were a few new sellers there and a few dealers just clearing out slow moving stock - like old zoom lenses. I might well be taking a few of these to sell at the next fair, but there are some definite keepers. I was looking for the 01A and 19AH Tamron's, the Rokkor, Vivitar and 7 Artisan are certain keepers as well. That's my problem really, I always buy, and keep, way more than I sell. But this time I sold some decent stuff and made about £300 profit. Laughing
