So the Zenit 3M has arrived and I've check the Helios 44.. Its a 13 blade, but in m39 mount.. Serial number 106668..

Going to test it on the Dslr later....

Congratulations!
I bought two, both for a cheap price but neither had 13 blades.
They are both silvery though and perform well.

Thanks! It was a lucky eBay buy tbh, but I'm made up with getting this version of the Helios 44. Now to restrain myself from developing that habit n'all.. my DDR thing is bad enough... Very Happy

One thing though, I am a bit perplexed as to how and why someone has literally glued a yashica hotshoe mount on to the camera.. o.0

So a quick walkaround and the realisation this thing doesn't focus to infinity...o.0

Obviously wrongly adapted. Zenit/M39 is 45.2 mm register distance; i.e. M42 is too long (45.46 mm).
Correct adaption for infinity focus on mirrorless cameras would be on a M39/LTM to camera adapter with additional M39 16.4 mm distance ring betw. adapter and lens.

With that in mind, I've got a set of Russian M39 rings in the post now; one of which is 16mm, so I presume that'll be pretty close to what's required?

Couldn't believe how scare these things were west of the Iron Curtain, the set I got is coming from Russia and most of all the others I saw were generally from the east...

Not really had much use with it yet, but I did manage this quick portait in low light at 800; not the sharpest but you can already see that circular bokeh... No PP other than exposure upped a stop, the colour and contrast is straight "out the can"

That's exactly the right set. Actually it is 16.4 mm. Therefore on the M39 adapter you should perfectly get infinity.

Nice looking and probably rare Preset Vivitar ; what mount is it??

It's on an Exakta mount.

That's funny,I thought I wouldn't have any lens in that mount; the Topcor I've got is sitting in the RE Super, waiting for the adapter to arrive....

Yes, they have the same mount, but still manage to be incompatible in use from what I've read. Erm.. I think. I've still not quite got my head around the whole Exakta/Topcon relationship.

I took a break from MF lenses while I got my Fuji kit together, the search for a portrait lens has brought me back. The crop sensor is more demanding and I found a lot of the lenses that went well on my A7 don't perform as good on my X-T3, so on I search! I've been trying to find a nice 55-58mm to pair it with but have yet to strike gold.

Minolta MC-II 58mm f/1.4 (Older purchase) - Wide open it's not very sharp and is quite hazy. Contrast improves at f/2 but even then it's still not very sharp. Stopped down to f/8 and it's excellent. Has a really nice vintage rendering as well, used right it can product beautiful pictures. Not the best choice for the crop sensor if you plan to use it at bright apertures (unless you're going for a specific look).

Minolta MC-II 55mm 1.7 (Older purchase) - One of my favorite lenses on film and the A7, unfortunately it doesn't impress me as much on aps-c. It's pretty soft and has low contrast up until f/2.8. Thankfully it still retains it's wonderful rendering that I love so much, but I still wouldn't choose it for crop.

Pentax m42 Takumar 55mm 1.8 (New purchase) - This is the first version, before they used radioactive glass. It's very prone to flare and not very sharp, but contrast is alright. I wasn't super impressed with it but it takes nice pictures, my wife ended up taking it for her Spotmatic.

Pentax m42 SMC Takumar 55mm 1.8 (New purchase) - This is the last m42 version before the K mount, it has radioactive glass. It's a little bit sharper than the 1st version, has better contrast, and it handles flare way better. It's the best lens in this category up to this point, but even then it's only a tiny bit sharper than the 1st version. I'd like something that can resolve a bit more detail. I ended up selling it (wife's prerogative because it's radioactive and we have babies).

Pentax K SMC 55mm 1.8 (New purchase) - This version renders the sharpest out of any 55mm lens I've tried so far, but it is notably hazier at 1.8 than it's predecessors which reduces overall resolution. It has a wonderful rendering, I really like this lens and right now it's my favorite fast 55mm.

Canon FL 55mm 1.2 (New purchase) - A heavy chunk of metal and glass, I decided to give it a shot. Up until f/2 it's not very sharp and contrast is low. The colors out of this lens are beautiful and bold though, very lovely. It's very difficult to focus but if you get it right it pays off. This lens makes me regret going Fuji crop, I imagine I'd absolutely love it on the A7. On the Fuji it seems unnecessary since I rarely use it wide open.

I then branched out and tried some 50mm lenses.

Pentax-M SMC 50mm 1.7 (New purchase) - I bought one of these last year but it suffered from haze and element separation. This new copy has no problems and wow, it's pretty nice. The center resolution is really great and rendering is nice too. It's high contrast and handles flare very well. My only complaint is that corners don't get razor sharp until f/8 while on the PK 55mm they are good from f/2.8. Since I'm using it as a portrait lens this isn't a huge deal to me.

Minolta MD-III 50mm f/2 (Older purchase) - I've had this one for a while but I had to give it a mention. Even on crop it's center resolution is excellent even wide open, the best performer I've found yet. Like the Pentax-M 50mm 1.7 the corners take some time to get sharp but it doesn't handle flare as well (still pretty good though). It's currently my gold standard, if I could find a 55-58mm with similar central resolution and performance I'd stop looking.

It is but it's also a bit of a beast to handle... Since the Russian's upped the game with the 13-blade Helios, the East Germans struck back with a 15-blade Pentacon 135/2.8 - i.e the Orestor in disguise... Build is a bit wonky compared to some Pentacons I've used - so much so I managed to start unscrewing the rear cover of the lens without realising it, whilst attempting to focus.. Very Happy

Results are interesting but it's sooo soft wide open.. I think it might also benefit more from shooting on a full-frame to get a lower minimum shutter speed and the proper 135mm aspect.. mind you, given I got it for about 20% of the going rate of the 15-blade version I am NOT complaining.. Very Happy

And with this one, the softness is pretty apparent - but that contrast...

Sharpness is not always the main factor.

lol.. well.. It IS a monster!!

Took it out for a quick 20 minute stroll on the full-frame, shooting at about 800-1250 ISO; now obviously shooting wide open a lot (I think the best I got was f/4) the DOF doesn't make it great for capturing much depth in a scene.. obviously.. but the first shot; the sharpness of the girl on the left is something else, pity I couldn't have shot it at 5.6 or so... but hey ho....

Some of the rest;

bokeh, much?

And finally, my favourite.. and to hell with sharpness...

I think on the full-frame DSLR, this is love... Tuzki with lens

It might take a bit of getting used, especially for low light; but it's definitely got something do it...

So, my "not going to buy anything for a while" lasted all of about one day; but in my defence- I did get quite a few unusual German lenses for a steal. One thing I have got is a job lot of an Exa II with a range of Enna lenses. I've ID'd most of the other lenses - Enna Lithagon 28mm f/3.5, and possibly an Ennalyt 95mm f/2.8 (its the only thing that looks THAT blocky and zebra... but has anyone any idea what could be stuck to the set of bellows in the pic below???

and the other lenses:

Looks like some Japanese made preset lens? Lentar? Soligor? Not too sure.

I was heading towards Soligor 105 2.8 Wink . Good luck.

And careful with that finder/prism if you don't already know. The metal covering is easy to dent, although you do actually need to knock it against something.

Have you considered M-mount (or LTM, L39) glass at all? Not sure what kind of budget you're looking at but I've been WAY into the RF lenses on my Nikon Z cameras. Most I have tried are excellent. The CV 50/1.5 Nokton is awesome (modern, but still MF). While not 50mm lenses, I am amazed by the the CV 35/1.7 Ultron and an older Nikon W-Nikkor-C 3.5cm f/2.5 lens. Both exhibit just excellent sharpness and image quality and I confidently use them wide open all the time. Canon has a number of renown 50's in LTM mount (I have yet to try them). I would think the size would be perfect for your X-T3. Get an M-mount adapter with a helicoid so you can focus a bit closer than these RF lenses traditionally did. But I can't say enough about them.

Noted.. I've not got too much experience with the Exas, only putting a couple of rolls through an Exakta RTL1000, so not even near the full Exa experience. I've got a cute looking Exa I which I got for the Meritar more than anything.. Oddly enough, I'd just ordered an Exa/E mount adapter a couple of days ago, figuring it would at least let me try out the Meritar and the 50/1.8 Orestor I'd got with the Exa/Exakta, so quite well timed.. Very Happy

Expect some kind of gallery post in a bit as I've got quite a few German lenses set to arrive now as in addition to the Exa lenses, I've also got a couple of Edixa Flexs in the post with a Steinheil Munchen Cassar S 50mm f/2.8 and Culmigon 35mm f/4 attached to them... I figure that really is IT for a while.. >.<

I have the Exa (*1.6) with a (*H3.3) flip up finder currently on it. It's as cute as a button.

*Wrotniak system.

And a pile of Exakta's. With, as you say, the obligatory pile of lenses that arrive with them. Nothing exotic unfortunately. Not even a Pancolor!

Neat. I'd tried to check that site last night to see about that lens and must've got an old inaccessible version...

I'm in the middle of relocating so I'll stave off another collecting habit for now though.. 😆

My "socialist" lens collection is bad enough..

Luckily I've got a couple of decent flight cases coming as I'm going to need it with the post I'm expecting now.. 😆

I'm going to blacklist ebay on my internet and stick to charity shops for a while I reckon.... Very Happy

Saying that though, this has largely (if not entirely) been funded by offloading automatic lenses - so much so I'm just keeping one; my good 24-70/2.8, i.e workhorse - and I reckon it's one of the best decision's I've made. It's like having a collection of different brushes now and I definitely think my photography has benefited from it.. I actually have people asking me more what filter I'm using and now I'm increasingly saying none, given each lens has its own characteristics...

So I've wasted my money on this then???

In other news, the EXA 2 arrived and the Enna Lithagon 28mm/f3.5 was in good condition, though it is one of the Enna interchange types. The 240mm however had a bit of fungus on it but I'll probably see about getting it looked at later to see if there's any chance of it being rescued. (then again when these things do come up they're not that expensive...)

So to the other lenses, the chrome covered thing turned out not to be an Enna but instead an Auto-Sankor 135mm/f2.8 - six blades, and in lovely condition.. so shiny, so chrome..

The thing attached to the bellows turned out to be a Photopia 135mm f/2.5 - with 12 blades at least.

So a few more toys to try out... Very Happy

As an update; here's a few shots from the Enna Lithagon 28mm/35, trying to shoot around f/5.6 - f/8ish..

Not sure whether it was because I was at 800 iso a lot; but it has a more filmy feel to it...
