Orio:

Orio comes from Ancient Greek word "Hooreos" (ώρεος ) which means "handsome, elegant".
I found this etimology after a long search. It is now confirmed by the most diffused First Names vocabularies.

Before there was the wrong belief that it could come from Latin "Aurea" which means "golden" and was used as a woman's name hinting at blonde (golden) hair. It was never really used for men except in late imperial age so that is why I always doubted about it being the correct origin.

Another common misbelief is that Orio and Orion may come from the same origin, but it's completely wrong. Orion comes from the mythological hunter loved by Artemis, and has nothing to do with the name Orio.

Another again wrong belief is that Orio may be short for Gregorio (Gregory), but that has been proven false, also.

By the way, I have a saint, too. Laughing I found about it only a couple years ago. Sant'Orio was a Greek Christian martyr killed by the lions in Rome during the Empire age. When I was brought to the church for baptize, I was only a few days old, the priest did not want to baptize me, because he said (wrongly) that there is no saint with my name. Think how stupid some people is!

Another curiosity I found out: there are people called Orio also in the USA!
One of them was a hero, Orio Palmer, he was one of the firemen who were killed trying to take people out of the towers in World Trade Center on 9/11:

My full name is "Avneesh Singh Balyan"

Avneesh: Its different from Avinash, a common confusion point. This (Avneesh) has Sanskrit (old Indian Language, and in India its known as mother of most of European and Asian, till India, languages).
Avneesh is coming from combination of this sentence (or group of words), "Avni ka Ish", "Ish of Avni".
Avni means Earth (in Sanskrit/Hindi)
Ish means God (in Sanskrit/Hindi)

So Avneesh means: "God of Earth".. or in loose term who rules on big section of earth

Singh: the middle name, which literally means Lion. This tells the background of my social group, which was warrior (but from farming community).

Balyan: This last name. It has lot of variation. But we know exactly how many villages of Balyan are there (spreaded across 3-4 states in north India). Total 84 villages. I never able to in the meaning of this word, but what I know this is common name in eastern Turkey and Azerbaijan. May be linked to that part of the world.

My name, Peter, is derived from the Greek Πετρος (Petros) meaning "stone". With different spellings (like Piotr, Pjotr, Pietro, Pierre etc) it seems to be a common name in virtually all European languages. When you link my surname, Taylor, which is also a common name in many languages, I have very many namesakes! Smile

The "qd" part of my signature comes from when I was a member of an MSN Group dedicated to helping each other to quit smoking. Members who had been quit for at least a year could add "qd" (meaning "quit date") to their name, with figures indicating the date. Mine was 190103 (19 January 2003).

Well , I don't know the origin of my name. When I was born it was a pretty used name for new born babies. I saw on some sites that it would be originated from the greek term cosmos (kosmos) κόσμος but I'm not sure about it. However, I don't like how sounds its english version (if is this): Cosmo .

By the way, here is the romanian version of Peter: Petre and the hungarian one Péter (hope I wrote it correctly).
