I think we all have travelled to different locations.
If you had to choose the five most impressive places where you have been and which stick in your mind most persistently, what would this list look like?

I'll start this round:

1. London
2. Scotland, the Highlands
3. New York City
4. Rome
5. Seattle (Most people understand the first 4, but not this one. Well it's about personal impressions, right?)

And Vienna, Oslo, Kopenhaven, Budapest and Washington D.C. come pretty close!

Why no German place? I don't know, maybe I'm too close. The greatest of the big German cities is Hamburg, for sure.

It's very difficult to reply, I have not traveled much, only to Europe, and usually when I go some place it's because I am already interested in the place, so I usually like it wherever I go.

Instead of making a ranking I'll say a couple words on each city I have visited, but keep in mind, I am the kind that often prefers small cities and even villages to big cities:

Paris: for me it's the city of the arts, and every corner of it speaks to me of some beautiful art memory. It's a magical place, I have no other words for it's magic, I can't wait to get back.

Roma: Roma is breathtaking, so much art from all ages (from ancient to Renaissance and Baroque), and a beautiful sunlight. And some of the best food you can find anywhere on earth. Negative side: too much traffic (in Paris they managed better to keep big traffic away from the historical centre).

London: is a very young city, probably too young for an old man like me. It has beautiful monuments and corners also, but I have to say I prefer the England countryside to London Town. Going around through the green countryside and the small villages is the best of England for me.

Berlin: the Unter der Linden is spectacular, but the old places are really few as the bombs really zeroed the old city unfortunately. There are of course great new buildings but I am not a fan of contemporary architecture so I have to say in general I've been let down by Berlin. A big exception being the huge Botanical Garden, an incredible place.

Budapest: the reason why I don't like much Berlin is the reason why I loved much Budapest. You can really still see the old city there. Lots of fantastic buildings and monuments. Breathtaking views. In some parts of the city there are some very old buildings in ruins, and I loved also to see them, I know most people don't, but I found them fascinating, because they talk to me of the past and of the identity of the Hungarian nation, unfortunately I fear they will be replaced by anonymous commercial places, that look identical everywhere in the world.

Stavanger: beautiful little wooden houses city in a breathtaking natural scenery. I miss it very much

Oslo: I loved the northern light in there (I was there in the winter), in some places it really looks like a little Paris of the North. Beautiful museums, and amazing the Vigeland park

Venezia: well, I don't know what to say that has not been already said. Speaking photography-wise, the best portrait photography set in the whole world, I can't imagine a bad portrait picture being taken in Venice. Smile

Firenze: lovely miniature city like I like to call it, fantastic museums, and the Garden of Boboli is worth a visit alone

Napoli: worst city I have ever been to, sorry Neapolitans that I have to say this, but it's chaotic, unbelievably dirty, and very, very dangerous. Every day I woke up when I was there, the local newspaper reported of one person killed in the streets. And the bay is for most part invisible due to an industrial harbour (that is also very dangerous place to go). Will never go there again

Milano: basically it's a crappy industrial business city, but it has incredible gems here and there, like the Dome of course, and other churches and museums. But they are not together, they are sparse here and there and surrounded by horrible smoggy chaotic traffic.

OK I only talked about the big cities, then there would be the medium-sized cities and small cities that I visited, but it would take forever so here I stop.

thanks for the memories. I had forgotten how much I disliked Napoli - dont often think of the place. Did you ever get to Stockholm? Beautiful, manageable city. and for light - the western islands of Denmark.

NO, that is a major regret of mine. I planned to go there while I was in Oslo, but for several reason I could not.
Through Denmark and Holland I have only been through airports, would like to visit both one day.
Also I would like to visit Helsinky and the Baltic Republics.
And.... and...

Yes, Helsinki and Stockholm are beautiful cites. You should go there.
In 1990 after my school exams (Abitur) I travelled through the northern countries. I visited Kopenhaven, Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki and several smaller towns - that was really nice!

I've never been to Europe, always wanted to go, but here's a few of mine:

1. Chiang Mai, Thailand
2. Phuket
3. Sanur Beach, Bali
4. Cairns, Australia
5. Kagoshima, Japan

Don't much care for Bangkok except the water market is fun. There are a lot of other places in SEA I like, but the limit here is 5. Wink

Jesito, reading your post I remembered that I forgot to mention Barcelona!!
How could I?? It's surely in my top five! At least, the Barcelona pre-olympics, the one that I know. I hope the Olympics restructuration didn't change the heart of the city.

How could I?? It's surely in my top five! At least, the Barcelona pre-olympics, the one that I know. I hope the Olympics restructuration didn't change the heart of the city.

Yes, you're right. The olympics improved a lot the city, cleaning the old squares but letting untouched the core of the city. We all barcelonians thank a lot the Olympics, it was a nice push to the city improvement. New accesses, new infrastructures, a big cleanup... We would need such a push every four years... Wink

Best regards,
Jes.
